Default Buying a car

In the UK I have always brought and sold my cars privately. When my partner and I move to Brisbane in July I have concerns buying a car will be a whole new ball game. Does anybody have any tips on buying a car, taxing it and insuring it?

I have a couple of websites but don’t even know the models out in Oz so it’s a bit tricky. To begin with I want to buy something really practical like a station wagon, van or pick up, as we’ll be moving around, buying furniture etc. I only want to spend $5000. Does anybody have any ideas?

With a budget like that, I think you are best waiting till you get to Oz, and see what is being offered. I'm not a specialist on cars by a long way, but 5K won't go too far in Oz. I have read on these forums that the second hand market in Oz is very strong, and the money you want to spend, you need to look individually.

If you do a search on this forum, youll get plenty of answers in general about cars and values.

Click here and browse around to get a feel for the cars in Australia. Most of them will be very familiar to you; many are simply rebadged or marketed under a different name.

Click here for a large number of car reviews. It should help you to find your feet.
