Re: British tourist dead
I agree with the above post. Why do we give out such lenient sentences, not just in this case, but in so many others? Why not just give out harsher sentences (longer imprisonment, longer no parole period)?
Having said that, I can understand the logic when it comes to "first offenders".

The problem with many first offenders it just means the first time they have been caught or indeed prosecuted.
One of the reasons longer sentences arent handed out is the lack of space in prisons, another is that judges dont live on this planet.

Manslaughter doesn't seem strong enough. The driver deliberately drove fast and dangerously enough for the police to start chasing him, and for the police helicopter to monitor him once the police ground chase was called off. The driver also turned his lights off and that was deliberate. The stolen car was a Landcruiser, one of the biggest cars on the road and often have bullbars. There have been enough of these car chases for drivers to know that their actions are likely to cause injury or death to others. Can't the police upgrade the charge to murder, or is that what their proposed legislation is trying to do?
The only way a charge of murder can be laid is if the driver deliberately ran someone over, or meant to hit the other vehicle, to injure someone. There's been a horrific driving situation overnight here in the UK in Wales I think, a man has deliberately run in to a crowd and injured 11 people one woman has died, he has been arrested on a murder charge.

If only it had been a large truck instead of a taxi, the outcome would have been very different and justice would have been served

Re: British tourist dead
Too right, I love it when it's on the news that the occupants of a car being chased by the police have crashed and perished, better them than some innocent members of the public.

Re: British tourist dead
it's sad when people die unexpectedly.
this happened in the US:
One dead, 48 injured in Arizona bus crash
Australians on board a bus which crashed in the United States after touring the Grand Canyon have escaped without serious injury, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) says.
The bus was northbound on Highway 93 in Arizona on Friday night (US time), nearing the Nevada state line, when the driver is believed to have suffered a heart attack and lost control.

As a precaution, it pays to have travel insurance!

Re: British tourist dead
My point is that when you steal a vehicle of that size and power, with bull bars, joy ride it through a conurbation, at night, without lights, pursued by police, (and possibly drunk or high) then it must be presumed you're going to kill someone. It is no different to unloading a machine gun in a shopping mall and saying "but I didn't intend to kill anyone so it's manslaughter".
The little bastard should be charged with murder.

I agree, but the courts and the law think differently, to me it is a very grave offence a reckless act, which should see him banged up for twenty plus years, but it's likely he will get nowhere near that and there will be someone on the tv saying, it's all we could give him, because it's all the law allows, it needs changing, but we were saying this years ago.
