I went past this crash this morning - an horrific sight. Apparently, the passenger was a UK scientist who had just arrived in Perth for a conference. Came in on the 1am Emirates flight, dead at 2am. Young taxi driver dead too.
Absolutely f**ked up.

Re: British tourist dead
It somehow makes it worse that the other vehicle was stolen and was being monitored by the Police. If it was a simple accident it would be easier for the families to cope with.

It was a crash on the Gnangara Road in June, that killed the best friend of my sons girlfriends parents.
Her husband was a FIFO miner and she had just dropped him at the airport and left the kids at home while she went to the airport. The accident was caused by a guy on a 3 day drug binge, who over-took a cement truck and 'clipped it' causing it to roll over onto the car coming the other way.
Police went to the house registered with the vehicle..... and found the kids waiting for their Mum to return home from the airport.
Dad was on a plane and received the 'news' at the mine and had to be flown back the same day.
The person who caused the death can get parole in just 4 years and 10 months (he'll be 21) and can enjoy the rest of his life..... he should have got 10 years minimum.

Count down to how long the police are put in the frame for this one. We had a similar tragedy in Canberra a few years ago and the police copped more than the scumbag who mowed her down (he was around 13 at the time and has subsequently been a multi repeat offender).
Incredibly tragic for the victims' families. If there ever was a case for locking up and chucking the key this would be one of them!

Re: British tourist dead
Manslaughter doesn't seem strong enough. The driver deliberately drove fast and dangerously enough for the police to start chasing him, and for the police helicopter to monitor him once the police ground chase was called off. The driver also turned his lights off and that was deliberate. The stolen car was a Landcruiser, one of the biggest cars on the road and often have bullbars. There have been enough of these car chases for drivers to know that their actions are likely to cause injury or death to others. Can't the police upgrade the charge to murder, or is that what their proposed legislation is trying to do?
