Maybe it depends where you live? Where we live in the UK at the moment, you can choose to have your landline phonecalls and internet service with a number of different providers. But the rental of the phone line has to be with/through BT.
As for BT's customer service: the call centre is now in India. Last time I needed to phone them, the guy was obviously reading off a sheet of paper. When he asked me if we had a phone line that was hard-wired into a box on the wall, I gave up on him and put down the phone.
I'd already told him how much I needed the internet. How could I have internet if I still had an old-style hard-wired phone line????
Clearly, BT's job descritpion for the call centre only includes the requirement to be able to read. You don't need to be able to think!

You done with the soap box now me lovey pass it over
.I have to say we have never had problems with our BT phone line. Internet though is a different kettle of fish and I was passed from pillar to post 3 times a week for 3 months, on occasion I spoke to some foreign people actually towards the end they all seemed to be foreign and there was alot of confusion as we were struggling to understand what the other was saying !!
In the end i phoned up customer service for our landline and told them as politely as I could that if they couldn't do it themselves or arrange for it to be done I was going to cancel broadband and the phone bill with them and go elsewhere, it was done and dusted in the same day.
Been struggling to set up my wireless connection today butspoke to a very nice foreign lady, still a little confusion so anything major she had to spell out for me and vice versa but i'll give her all the credit she sorted the technical problem out for me in 15 minutes, thats almost as long as I was waiting to speak to someone. An last time I had technical difficulties (2 years back) the assistant put the phone down on me after half an hourand I had to start again

Anyway off me soapy now, and I like em today cause it means I can chat to you in bed before I shut down and go to sleep

lesley,i just thought i should be fair an explain why i cant stand british telecom..
1.they mostly have u.k people when there is money involved,i.e their trying to sell you something ,anything else they ship you off to india.
2.they dont realise that getting through to them is an effort in itself, they even have the cheek to ask you to ring back on sunday when they are less busy,if you cant get through at any time during the day or night, its purley that they dont have enough staff.
3,they dont realise that after waiting half an hour to be put through that you are a little frustrated..you may of been transfered 2/3 times
4.then when you do get through they say,"if you dont calm down mr aston man im going to end this call".
5.they put the phone down on you ,not vey nice after you have been on the phone an hour,3 times they put the phone down on me the other night
6.saying everything 5 times to someone in a far off land is a little frustrating..
7,their answer to everything is,"we have tested your line mr aston man and everything is fine",well why doesn't it work then.
8.its true that they have a secrete department that they use in this country for people that refuse to talk to people in a far away land.now after spending a month telling those people the same thing every day ,sometimes having to repeat yourself ten or fifteen times during the course of a day ,it can be a little frustrating..
9.the secrete u.k technical broadband help transfers you to a far away land after half hour of waiting.
10.they had to give me £147,back in calls for phone calls made to their technical support in december..
11.i got that last week..but they cut me off before i got it.
12,after a month and a half of telling them there was a problem with my broadband line ,when i was lucky enough to get an engineer from openreach, after 500 line tests ,it was not connected at the exchange.
13,no one leaves notes on the computer.
14.why should you have to pay in advance.i dont get paid in advance,i dont know anyone else that does why do they?
15.they just dont give a poo about you?not all of them there are some nice ones that do try and help.
16.the computers in india are not linked to here,so if you have to deal with here and there ,its a nightmare..
17.they know people dont like talking to people that cant hardly understand them so why do they it.
18,their not interested in customer service just profit.
19.why are companies in the u,k promoting their companies now by saying they have u.k call centers..???

20,why dont the people at telecom have extension numbers so,they can be accountable for what they have told you?
21,why dont they ever ask paying customers how they can improve their service,or ask them if they have been happy with the service they have received??

), I had problems with BT Broadband for 7 months, yes 7 months. I would connect and it would disconnect me after about 4 minutes. After 7 months of complaining and probably around 50 phone calls including one bl**dy woman telling me to climb under my desk, unscrew my phone jack plug and check some bl**dy switch in it, (still cant believe I did actually do this), I told them very politely where to put it. guess what they sent me ........ A ONE yes ONE pound IE : £1 gift voucher. I still have it. Didnt want to bankrupt BT.:curse:

what i wanted to get across is a reply to gina her quote
"Clearly, BT's job descritpion for the call centre only includes the requirement to be able to read. You don't need to be able to think!"
thats unfair and not all of us agree.

customer service for your phone line is not in india broadband repair is in india so try getting your facts right before slating others who actually work for bt in uk and can do more than read form a script.
try doing training courses from bt and what we have to do before we take a call from customers in the uk then see how easy it bloody is!!!!!!!!!!!!!
