But very affordable when you're earning £s.

The roads are slow.
True!

Extremely cold weather is not better than hot weather.
Not true! I have been grinding my teeth in envy, watching the UK blizzards on ABC News 24. Give me cold weather, give me rain, give me ice, give me snow, dammit!

The drivers aren't courteous.
I think most of them are. That's my experience, at any rate. Having said that, I've been pleasantly surprised by the drivers on my work route lately. Lots of folks letting each other in with a friendly wave (four fingers and a thumb, not the traditional single-finger-salute!)

There are lots of miserable people (especially in London).
London: working as intended! :D

And where's the festive spirit.
It was cancelled due to the Tory budget cuts; too expensive, apparently! :D

The amount of monitoring and security checks is oppressive.
You don't enjoy the attention? :D

Attractions are expensive (except for Cadw and museums - see below).
Depends where you go, I guess. I remember seeing a lot of great stuff in places like Shropshire and Edinburgh for free (or at least very cheap).

I'm back for a 2nd time in 2 years since moving to Oz, and apart from the filthy streets, grey skys, miserable people and cold weather, the indian food is great :)

Ah yes. That's something I always found quite repulsive. Very different to home.

Indeed

Pretty predictable really

Yes. You are predictable.

This trip however has been a big (unpredictable) change for me. Previously I've been well disposed towards the UK but now not so. I know you (and presumably bcworld) think otherwise but that's only because I don't subscribe to the everything is better in the UK attitude. Which for me puts people in the same bucket as the god-zoners. Same thoughts different object.

I think it's fair to say that slightly chilly weather is better than extremely hot weather. But living in extremely cold weather (without being in a ski-resort) is just as bad as living in extremely hot weather.

Having lived through the cold, rain, ice an snow for the last month I can firmly say that I prefer it when I can drive to it and drive from it but I don't have to live in it.

Have to agree. I remember that after about a week of snow (tops!) most people were sick of it - in fact I chiefly remember how dangerous it was - with people slipping over whilst negotiating frozen ice on the pavements.

I was reflecting on my trip and other thoughts I had for it was it was all sort of cute and a bit of a novelty, in fact. I wonder if I would have had a different opinion 2 years on.

We had a trip back in Sep/Oct 2009. Really loved being back. Weather was great over that period, and that helped.

I don't subscribe to that attitude either. I'm not going to search through your posts for evidence, all I was saying is that from reading your posts over the years I formed an opinion that you didn't have a particularly high opinion of the UK...if that was wrong, so be it.

Until this trip I've always had a positive opinion of the UK.

Maybe that doesn't count as a high opinion.
