Best security system?

With the holiday season coming up, and numerous overseas trips coming up, does anyone have a really good kick ass home security system that they'd recommend?

Both houses that we have moved in to had chubb 'back to base' alarm systems, which we immediately disabled, because we didn't want the on-going fees.

All I really want is a few motion dectors around the house, a few door and window opening detectors, a few incredibly loud sirens, maybe a camera if its cheap-ish. But I could be persuaded otherwise on any of the above, and other extras too.

Whats the best security system, say for about $1000-$2000?

Get a security alarm system (door, window magnetic sensor, motion dector types) with a main remote with display, add on at least 4 infra red motion detector surveillance cameras with digital video recorder function and you are set. Also get those signs that says 'this property is under video surveillance', one at the front door area and one at the back door area (if there is a back door). IF you want to go all out, get spot lights or just any normal out door lights at windows, front door, back door and any venerable areas and integrate it with PIR motion detectors that turns on the lights when anything comes into its detection range.

Shouldn't cost you more then $1000 if you fix it yourself and not getting it from rip off merchants.

That is the best you can do with a once off cost without ongoing subscription fees for security company.

"I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?"

Okey doke...

BTW, this thread reminded me about an segment on A Current Affair about 10 or so years ago. It showed car alarms and how car theives get around them. A guy they claimed was a car theif (but never convicted for it) said that when a new system comes out, the professional theives buy one and reverse-engineer it to see how to get around it.

Yeah, I couldn't find the Home Security Alarms forum. But thanks for all the advice about getting a dog

Have you looked at my avatar? Thats my dog.

I could of course leave him in the house when we go away, and I'm sure he would do a great job of defending the house for the first week. However, after 2 weeks, I'd hate to come back to a house covered in dog shit and urine.... and a starved dehydrated dead dog.

I have told our friends that they must be nuts.. they have small kids and those dogs could easily kill... but they say the dogs would never hurt them.... they scare the crap out of me and I've told them as much.
