Best security system?
With the holiday season coming up, and numerous overseas trips coming up, does anyone have a really good kick ass home security system that they'd recommend?
Both houses that we have moved in to had chubb 'back to base' alarm systems, which we immediately disabled, because we didn't want the on-going fees. All I really want is a few motion dectors around the house, a few door and window opening detectors, a few incredibly loud sirens, maybe a camera if its cheap-ish. But I could be persuaded otherwise on any of the above, and other extras too. Whats the best security system, say for about $1000-$2000? JTL |
Re: Best security system?
Get a security alarm system (door, window magnetic sensor, motion dector types) with a main remote with display, add on at least 4 infra red motion detector surveillance cameras with digital video recorder function and you are set. Also get those signs that says 'this property is under video surveillance', one at the front door area and one at the back door area (if there is a back door). IF you want to go all out, get spot lights or just any normal out door lights at windows, front door, back door and any venerable areas and integrate it with PIR motion detectors that turns on the lights when anything comes into its detection range.
Shouldn't cost you more then $1000 if you fix it yourself and not getting it from rip off merchants. That is the best you can do with a once off cost without ongoing subscription fees for security company. |

"I know what you're thinking, punk. You're thinking "did he fire six shots or only five?" Now to tell you the truth I forgot myself in all this excitement. But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?"

BTW, this thread reminded me about an segment on A Current Affair about 10 or so years ago. It showed car alarms and how car theives get around them. A guy they claimed was a car theif (but never convicted for it) said that when a new system comes out, the professional theives buy one and reverse-engineer it to see how to get around it. |

Yeah, I couldn't find the Home Security Alarms forum. But thanks for all the advice about getting a dog  Have you looked at my avatar? Thats my dog. I could of course leave him in the house when we go away, and I'm sure he would do a great job of defending the house for the first week. However, after 2 weeks, I'd hate to come back to a house covered in dog shit and urine.... and a starved dehydrated dead dog. JTL |

We have friends who have two of those monsters in their back yard.... and they are terrifying. So long as you are with their owners you are OK... but it's just the way they look at you that's so scary.

What is it about dog owners that have blinkers on as far as their killer dogs are concerned?
I have a reasonable sized dog, but he's basically a Pointer, so it's not in his nature to attack... but these things are just insane to keep as family pets... and I see plenty of other huge mastiff type monsters being walked round the streets that I'm convinced would be illegal in the UK... and should be here. |

Years ago, the local cop had two Dobermans. In a country town the station was attached to the residence, so the dogs used to run in the yard. Never went to the station unless I knew the dogs were a) tied up,or b) the Sargeant was around. One time I went there, he was on the verandah, but the dogs were still loose, so I still talked to him over the fence....

I watch the 8stone woman from three doors down take her, at least, 10stone Rottie for a walk on a daily basis... no way would I want to get in it's way 'cos there is no way she could handle it if it decided it to attack.
They cleared a 6ft paling fence and preferred the cops to Rocky....:D The only time he hurt my niece, was when she ran around a corner, bounce off him and then hit the corner of the under-house garage.... |

HEY SECURITY SYSTEMS FOR HOUSES!!!!!! We do use Chubb back to base ($27 a month - much cheaper than UK) and get a reduction in house insurance for it. It's good cos you tell them when you'll be away so they get the police round sharpish. Luckily ours was a false alarm but reassuring. |
