Yeah I agree, does seem a little steep for a slab.

I suppose it's gonna be more expensive for the European style lagers, I am planning on brewing my own anyway..

Found this not so long ago, thought it might be interesting to those on the forum -

http://www.pintprice.com/

Having done some googling it would also seem that draught beer in pubs is cheaper than the supermarket equivalents, coming out at around roughy $5 for a pint (£2.10)*

*please correct me if I am wrong as I have yet to sample my first Aussie Pub

MartinLuther is an unknown quantity at this point

$50 for a slab (24 stubbies) is about what you'll pay for premium beer. That works out at about £1.65 a pint.

For a mainstream beer you'll be looking at $35 per slab (approx £1.20 per pint).

In Victoria, pub prices are more like $7 (£2.80) a pint although you can probably get about $5 per pint in an RSL (or if you drink VB). CBD pubs can be more expensive (up to $9 per pint - but you can do better than this if you look around ).

You might find this site useful - http://www.beerstore.com.au/index.asp

The premium beers are $50 a slab, but mainstream beers are around the $30 a slab price. I don't stick to one beer, I just buy whatever's on special at the bottle shop.

I am the same as you, I drink pretty much whatever is on special offer (except VB )

I got a slab of Heiniken for $44.00 the other day, I saw it in another bottle shop a few days later at $57.00.

So it pays to not be to fussy.

Yea true - my local Dan Murphy's has Stella on at $40 for 24 at the moment and Tooheys Extra Dry (actually prefer that to Stella) for $30.

NSW doesn't tend to serve pints, unless you ask for them. In Sydney, beer tends to come in schooners at $4/5 a pop.

Have a look on boozle.com.au - you put in which beer you want and which suburb you are in and it tells you which bottle shop is the cheapest. It's really good, only thing is it doesn't do wine, only beer, spirits and those already made up drinks.

Try Tasman Bitter at about $30.00 a carton (24 x 375ml - always check that you're getting either 375ml or 330ml) at Liquorland only. It's 4.8% and quite drinkable.

Of course it's not really a bitter, but it goes down well anyway.

When I go to pubs in Perth, I find pints of nasty stuff like Toohey's New at about $7.00 (£2.90) a pint.
