Still don't rate them. Right place, right time, don't deserve the adulation though, just luck. Both only reasonable when on their own and both weighed down by untalented wives who got involved in their careers.

They pretty much created pop, then turned their hand to psychedelia and mastered both. I am not a huge fan, in fact I really can't stand their earlier pop stuff, but they deserve huge respect for the impact (positive) they have had on music. I reckon you could in some shape or form associate the Beatles to any style of music over the last 40 years.

I agree with you that by themselves they were crap, but that was the beauty of that partnership, they were the perfect musical partnership (Lennon and McCartney that is) that complemented each other amazingly. No other musical partnership even comes close to what they have left as part of their legacy

They probably peaked with 'Revolver'

After that it was just a bit mad, Sgt Pepper was a clever idea but not a great album. The white album should have been a single album rather than a double so obviously their quality control had gone out of the window, and Yoko was sticking her opinions in (Number 9 anyone?).

But to say they were irrelevant, even after Revolver is mad. What about 'Hey Jude', or 'Let it be'. They wrote some great stuff.

As for their solo stuff, Lennon did some quite good songs, but again, quality control had gone out the window. Some good songs, and some crap that shouldn't have made it out of the studio.

And of course, McCartney did the 'Frog Chorus', his seminal work.

Yeah, Sgt Pepper as its a clever and original idea, and has a few good songs on it.

The white album, because it has alot of good songs on it, interspersed with crap ones. As I say, an 'abridged' version of the white album would have been so much better.

Basically they should have got a producer to say, **** off Yoko, now here are the songs that have made it on to the album.

Strange isn't it, the two worse songs, in my opinion, they ever did, were Hey Jude and Let it Be. They are nearly as bad as Mull of Sodding Kintyre!

I still think it was luck and timing but it's just an opinion, not important ;)

They changed music. Utterly. They have a catalogue of some of some of the most original and timeless songs in history.
