Still don't rate them. Right place, right time, don't deserve the adulation though, just luck. Both only reasonable when on their own and both weighed down by untalented wives who got involved in their careers.
Just my opinion mind :D They pretty much created pop, then turned their hand to psychedelia and mastered both. I am not a huge fan, in fact I really can't stand their earlier pop stuff, but they deserve huge respect for the impact (positive) they have had on music. I reckon you could in some shape or form associate the Beatles to any style of music over the last 40 years. I agree with you that by themselves they were crap, but that was the beauty of that partnership, they were the perfect musical partnership (Lennon and McCartney that is) that complemented each other amazingly. No other musical partnership even comes close to what they have left as part of their legacy |
Re: The Beatles
They probably peaked with 'Revolver'
After that it was just a bit mad, Sgt Pepper was a clever idea but not a great album. The white album should have been a single album rather than a double so obviously their quality control had gone out of the window, and Yoko was sticking her opinions in (Number 9 anyone?). But to say they were irrelevant, even after Revolver is mad. What about 'Hey Jude', or 'Let it be'. They wrote some great stuff. As for their solo stuff, Lennon did some quite good songs, but again, quality control had gone out the window. Some good songs, and some crap that shouldn't have made it out of the studio. And of course, McCartney did the 'Frog Chorus', his seminal work. |

The white album, because it has alot of good songs on it, interspersed with crap ones. As I say, an 'abridged' version of the white album would have been so much better. Basically they should have got a producer to say, **** off Yoko, now here are the songs that have made it on to the album. JTL |

Re: The Beatles
They changed music. Utterly. They have a catalogue of some of some of the most original and timeless songs in history.
But they changed music, utterly. |

Strange isn't it, the two worse songs, in my opinion, they ever did, were Hey Jude and Let it Be. They are nearly as bad as Mull of Sodding Kintyre!
I still think it was luck and timing but it's just an opinion, not important ;) Mull of Sodding Kintyre:p . Right up there with the Sodding Frog Chrous eh? But seriously, songs like Penny Lane, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields. They still really work for me, and I've heard them 1000's of times. Oh I remember one that gave me nightmares as a kid, 'Fool on the hill'. It makes me shiver now even thinking of it. Even Eleanor Rigby freaked me out, apparently she keeps her face in a jar by the door. This was 30 years before Silence of the Lambs JTL |
Re: The Beatles
and I like John Lennon solo - I really dont get how anyone can say he was useless. I love Woman, working class hero, imagine etc - I mean its class!

I think it would be in my top 50 songs. I am a bit of an idealist too however my life definately doesnt represent that  |

I do, big time. :D Hate it in all walks of life and as I said, it totally colours how I view the song. Just think it totally simplistic and dislike the actual tune, bit too durge like for me. Vive la difference! |

agreed. And I love simple

Re: The Beatles
Love John Lennon, not so much as a singer, but lyrically he was a legend. Loved his 'Some time in New York City' album
Hey Jude, I am the Walrus and Eleanor Rigby are my favourite Beatles tunes. |

Interestingly, those 3 songs that you quote were actually almost exclusively written by McCartney and not Lennon
So there. |

I'm sure thats not what John Lennon was aiming for. If I had time I'd look it up for you, but its on youtube, something like 'If Imagine really happened'. JTL |

Re: The Beatles
Just so as you are aware, saying ''The Beatles are crap'' or ''they were just lucky'' or some such nonsense is no different to saying ''I know nothing at all about popular music''. They are identical statements in meaning.
Most songwriters will never write a song like Yesterday, Ticket To Ride, In My Life, Eleanor Rigby, Strawberry Fields Forever, And I Love Her, The Fool On The Hill, Hey Jude, I Am The Walrus etc etc etc etc etc etc in their entire careers. Lennon/McCartney each wrote dozens of classics whilst still only in their twenties. Saying that they were ''rubbish as solo artists'' is also silly. Both struggled to maintain the same standard once they didn't have the other to compete with any more but they still wrote good songs. Lennon especially wrote great stuff post-Beatles, but became fixated on Yoko/fighting the US government/having a Lost Weekend/being a Dad to Sean etc etc etc. Saying ''The Beatles are no good'' is the same as saying that there is nothing thought-provoking in the works of Shakespeare. |
Re: The Beatles
Noting that there are some pro-Australia types here slagging off The Beatles. Wonder if there's something significant in that.................................
Something about cultural redundancy perhaps. |

As for the pro Australian bit, I'm confused because I am as equally pro UK as I am Australian, so not sure where that puts me, other than in a very happy place. |
