Here in Melbourne I believe there's a fat filter around the city and inner trendy suburbs. When visiting on holiday and staying centrally I believed most aussie chicks were slim goddesses. Since living here in the suburbs I have discovered the exact opposite as you can't move for fatties.

Granted there are a few of us slim ones around here, but very rarely do any fatties breach the afore mentioned fat filter.

obviously while going out inside said filter, I normally receive multiple elbow blows to the ribs accompanied by filthy looks .

(anyway I don't have to google it all, a lot of it is already on my website, I just have to look there )

Does this guy look Normal, Overweight or Obese ?

He is a member of the 2009 Sea Eagles Rugby league team.

There are 17 Team members:
2 were in the normal category with BMI 18.5 - 25
11 were in the overweight category with BMI 25 - 30
4 were OBESE with BMI over 30
The above photo is of the most OBESE member with a BMI of 33.2.

When that is classed as Obese, how can tell in the street who is actually obese or not ?

Are you Obese ?

I am ONLY classed as overweight, much better than the above 'Obese' football player. But I am now out of breath, as I just had to run upstairs to check my weight...

I think one of the big things that the everyday Aussie is at a disadvantage over the everyday Brit is in their everyday exercise. I would guess that there are way more (percentage population wise) Brits catching public transport than there are Aussies. Just that simple couple of miles of walking to catch the bus or train would have a large impact on the weight of the average population. Added to that, I know an endless number of Brits back in the UK who do not own a car. I can probably count on one hand the amount of people who don't over here.
I do agree that the average Aussie is sportier that the average Brit, but I don't believe they are as regularly active

To be honest looking at that guy I wouldn't have guessed he was in the normal category that's for sure. There's certainly a bit of a spare tyre going on there! And if he's in that condition as a professional sportsman, while he may be otherwise fit, what's gonna happen when he gets put out to pasture?

It's a fact that Chicken Treat, McDonalds, Hungry Jacks, Dominos, etc, all target lower socio demographic areas for their new fast food outlets.

When I first came to Australia I was shocked at the amount of sugar found in traditionally non sugary products, like mayonnaise, coleslaw, salad dressings - yukky and pointless.

Also there's a lack of pre prepared dinners that are tasty, healthy and reasonable priced from the supermarkets here so I guess busy families go to Maccas for dinner. Families with both parents working these days, convenience rules over everything else. There's definately a market for decent shepherds pies, lasagnes, ready meals, like Tesco's Finest, Sainsbury's Healthy Options, etc.

But looking at him, would you have classed him as Obese ?

And consider also, that there are another 3 classed as obese on his team, he is just the worst of them.

And then there are 11 more that are classed as overweight.

It makes us realise why we don't seem to "see" many Obese people around, when ther are supposed to be so many in that category.

Most of us think that Obese is something much worse than that.

I wonder how many reading this are actually obese without realising it ?
(20% of British and 26% of Australians are classed as Obese. Only 23% of that "lightweight" football team is Obese though, although 65% are overweight, and 11% normal !!!)

If you are male and Height: 175cm and Weight: 92kg you are obese.
(5' 9" and 14st 7lbs)

An interesting article:
But some weight specialists have questioned the tool used to measure obesity, saying "entire rugby teams" would be classified as obese if their body mass index (BMI) was calculated.
Another Obese Australian
