Even though my Aus wife is a nurse, when she lived in the UK, she worked for Pitney bowes... earnt more money as a filing/general office clerk working for them in Kennington than as a trained nurse with the NHS... this is back in 77/78/79 BTW. Thats by and by.... reason I posted that info is they are a major international corporation, handling all sorts of office equipment and are heavily into franking machines... or were at that time.

So what 3rd party used them, if it wasn't the seller ? IE: who put selotape on the package, they dont usually come with that those USPS packages.

looks like there is more than one PB.....

it would be tedious to attempt to draw distinction between them...

I'll let you know if a packet goes a miss, I would probably write it off!

It's the same company Badge :)

They are a major international corporation with many facets to their business.

I never knew they handled individual mailing items until today though, Just thought they provided individual companies with the means to do so via their systems.

IE: http://www.pitneybowes.com.au/

I'll be watching out for US sellers who state "no overseas sales" or similar in their ad copy but still quote overseas shipping , this is how I came to buy this one.

In this instance Ebay picked up the ball along with it's trusty sidekick Paypal , the seller wasn't aware that he had sold overseas and I thought the seller was dealing/selling direct.

The key would be the extra unexplained additional US$7.50 local postage which showed up on my Paypal account when I went to pay.

I actually have no objection to the system , it gives access to items that the sellers don't want to take on selling outside of the US with Ebay/Paypal underwriting and handling the international shipping .

It would however be nice to know that was what was happening , the risk in packing for the seller is highlighted in this transaction where packing that might be adequate for domestic delivery has proved inadequate for the rigours and fingers of international shipping.

A further negative is the difficulty in dealing with Paypal over a dispute or lost matter, they would have to be one of the most obtuse, deliberately confusative, purposely misorganised and obstructive organisations I have ever dealt with which is a shame if they put half the effort into positive response instead of studied bastardry I'm sure their business would benefit enormously.

Just thinking out loud here :)

BASHO: I have been using my Pal, Pay for somewhile...

"never change me password, come in, my life savings are under my mattress (etc)" but I really must get back to using Credit Card transactions - in case the vendor goes bust besides.

To be honest, given the values involved ......I can't be arsed.

I ordered a book a few years ago that had [past tense] been banned in England & Australia. I ordered it from the local bookshop that in turn placed an order to a publishing house in Scotland. After a few weeks the book shop rang to say the book had arrived so I popped over to pick it up.
Luckily, for me, it had arrived in a large box which the kindly old chap opened when I arrived. The box was empty aside from a multitude of foam packing shrimps. Sent from Scotland via Parcel Force, inspected by Aus customs [stamped] then stolen by the company that delivered it to the bookshop [Auspost]
Of the 4 million letter/parcels that are stolen en-route within Australia each year I've only been unlucky a few times with nothing of great value disappearing into Pat's private sack.

First job here was sorting mail at a Brisbane Aus Post depot. One of the things that amazed me was the number of envelopes that weren't sealed. So these unsealed envelopes would sail into the machines then fall off the belt onto the floor - and a surprising number contained cash, not just notes but coins as well. The local staff said it was quite common here, especially among older people, to post money without sealing the envelopes, apoparently they did it so that the post office could see it was nothing illegal, and sometimes the post offices in small villages advised them to do it for that reason  I later found my MiL doing it, she seemed to think it was normal too.
Upshot of it was of course envelopes dropping money onto the floor........no way of tracing the envelope it came from. I wouldn't like to say where it went but suffice to say us casual staff were often told to move to a different area for a while so the regulars could clean up the stuff fallen on the floor of the conveyor belt machines.....

So you bought an item from ebay but the seller obviously didn't receive the usual notification of your (the buyers) name and address. You paid through paypal but again the seller obviously didn't get notification as that would have your name and address on it too? At least, he can't have done cos you say he didn't know you were abroad.

So effectively you must have bought through a third party, who was effectively subcontracting and selling someone else's goods on their behalf - otherwise the payment etc would have been between you and the seller, and he would have known you weren't in the US ?

Or am I missing something?

Bought direct from seller--payed through papal--seller advised by Ebay to ship to my name at USA address--which he did--box/item then readdressed to me @ my Aust address by shipping Co under the direction of Ebay/Paypal , subsequently box delivered empty by Startrack.

The seller didn't know that the item was going overseas , I didn't know that the seller wasn't shipping direct to me.

:)
