Thanks again everyone, have passed on the info to her, will let you know what she buys. To be honest I just think it's super-cool that at her age she's doing this, especially as the reason she wants one is to check her shares whilst she's visiting her 84 year old sister in Canada - and also teach her sister how to use it so they can Skype. Not bad for an 80 year old! x

I've come across several people recently who have both iphones and S3/S4's. All bought them because of hype but complain about allsorts. The thing doesn't even update location when you move state and allsorts of complaints, let alone bugs and crap.
Resale figures say it all if you ask me.
I have and love my iPhone 5 and iPad 3rd Gen.
LTE aint too shabby either ...

Show me the same with your Nexus, let alone if it actually runs all the aps you throw on it ...lol

For what it's worth here's a review I found comparing the iPad Mini and the Nexus that seemed quite even handed if that is possible:

I own both a Nexus 7 and an I pad mini. I find the display on the Nexus 7 superior to the I pad mini. The screen on the I pad mini looked dark while I viewed a show on hulu and the screen on the Nexus 7 looked much brighter.
The screen is larger on the I pad mini than it is on the Nexus 7.
The battery runs out super fast on the Nexus 7 and I get what seems like twice as much battery life from the I pad mini.
I cannot use the Nexus 7 while it charges, but I can use the I pad mini.
Hulu was freezing and stalling constantly on the Nexus 7 but played smoothly on the I pad mini.
Due to the fact that the screen has a better resolution and the processor is faster the Nexus 7 had a much better gaming experience than on the I pad mini.
The selection of the apps for the I pad mini is superior to those on the google play store for the Nexus 7. The Nexus 7 has hardly any educational apps for young children.
Nexus 7 must address the issues with the battery running out so quickly and the tablet taking forever to charge and not being able to use it for a good many hours while it does. They also need to address the issues with the hulu app that stalls and freezes. I don't buy the excuse that Jelly bean doesn't support flash because apple doesn't support flash either yet has a stable app to run hulu.
The app issue is a deal breaker because what is the point of owning a tablet if there aren't enough apps for it. But I have faith that the android market will soon catch up to apple in the app dept.
The I pad mini does need to offer a better quality display screen because they one they have is quite dark and hard to see. The speakers and the quality of materials used to make the i pad mini is superior to the Nexus 7.
Nexus 7 needs to come up with an otter box. Also the power connector gets stripped quite easily and the buttons used to control the on off switch and the volume get Jammed easy.
I have had a lot of fun playing with nexus and love many of it's features such as using the mic for google searches, And easy to use qwerty board that is better than apples, the gaming experience rules, it opens and closes programs at lightening speeds.
The Nexus 7 does heat up after a while and the I pad mini doesn't.
The Nexus 7 takes a good long while to turn on where the I pad mini is more responsive.
I will give an A to the apple I pad mini for quality and a B to the Nexus 7 for quality. Until Nexus improves their over all quality my next purchase will be the I pad 4.

Oh and why buy a mini? ... can't work that one out.

As the people I've bumped into that have something else as well as the iPad or iPohne, they all agree that the Apple works. No hassle with aps and it works well. Does what it says on the tin and runs for 10 hours without a recharge. I don't game much on it, but from the little I do it doesn't seem to affect the battery.
As I say, check S/H prices of all and you'll see Apple products hold their value VERY well, and that isn't cos they're rubbish! ...

I've played about a little with a mini but don't get it, unless you REALLY need something smaller.

Utter b*ll*cks and wrong in just about every respect - I mean, just factually incorrect.
Put it this way, the only reason the mini ipad exists at all is because the 7" Android tabs and the N7 in particular, were eating apple's market. As such the mini ipad was always created as a poor man's ipad (though still overpriced), whereas the Nexus 7 was purpose designed and the Nexus 10 was just a bigger version.

Well, let's just say I'd trust a politicians promises more than mr smith's words. In reality the battery lasts more than a day; the N7 screen has more pixels than the mini ipad; the N7 can run Flash sites (something the ipad can't) and displays all streaming sites fine; there are MORE android apps than apple, the power connector is a STANDARD, not a high priced proprietary thing; the buttons never 'jam'; the N7 turns on instantly...
See why it annoys?
