I agree with you, was just making a point that I can kind of understand them having a chip on their shoulder, and I think everyone would feel the same under the same circumstances

And people need to stop feeling sorry for them. It solves nothing and creates a victim culture.
Move on...

Captain Cook's observations of the Aboriginals were numerous and detailed; "these people may truly be said to be in the pure state of nature, and may appear to some to be the most wretched upon the earth; but in reality they are far happier than ... we Europeans."
And our ancestors screwed it for em

Western civilisation evolved slowly over a long period of time. The aboriginal way of life evolved over a far, far longer period of time, on a very different path. The traditional aboriginal way of life is incredibly far removed from western civilisation.
When Westerners arrived here a couple of hundred years ago, not only did they quickly set themselves up as the enemy, but also in a very short period of time, they introduced values that devastated aboriginal culture.
Efforts to rectify this situation have only been made in the past 30 or 40 years.
So we've got approx 40,000 or 50,000 years of aboriginal life. Then an invasion by white men a couple of hundred years ago. Then very, very recently the attitudes of white men towards aborigines have started to change.
What amazes me is that so many people downplay the significance of this history ! They just say things like "its all in the past now".

It is. Aboriginals need to deal with the fact that they were beaten - and have stayed beaten. 200-300 years ago a continent like Australia, populated only by a few hunter gatherers, was not going to stay like that for too long. UK did the world a favour by colonising Australia.
They need to accept the fact and move on.

But it isn't valid to say "its all in the past" when the resulting issues are happening now. That's just a cop-out. We live our lives knowing that actions have consequences.... we reap the benefits of good choices and pay for bad ones.

No muslim country is powerful enough to invade OZ. China and the USA are the only two countries that would be able to sucessfully invade and conquer OZ.

I can't believe I am reading this from a moderator in the Australia section of this site.
Very poor form. Also, if you are going to quote me, then please follow the site rules. You know, the one you are supposed to moderate.

People will carry on saying "it is in the past" and people will continue to look at aborigines as worthless, less than human. But I think that we should be recognising that this isn't all in the past, and an aboriginal person should be respected in the same way that a white person should.

There's Scots, Welsh, Irish, Ozzies, and probably numerous other nationalities that bear a grudge against England and the English even now after hundreds of years, and yet the Aboriginals are supposed to just 'get over' abuse that was happening as little as 40 years ago???? I'm no bleeding heart saying that all the handouts are right, but neither should they be dismissed as non humans who aren't worth a toss, 21st century is it? just checking

Just say we could give OZ back to the Aboriginies and all 20m non aboriginies left, do you think the Aboriginies would be better off? would they manage the country well? would OZ remain a wealthy ,peaceful ,first world country?
