I hope the Irish get back on their feet. At least they are trying unlike the Greeks who want to live off the rest of Europe. Believing in the unending rise of the housing market was foolish. Governments and regulators were too weak to say it was unsustainable. It is in the interest of Britain and its banks that Ireland gets back up.

So do I. I feel a bit sorry for the Irish as they have been forced to make full repayment ('no other option' they were told by the EU/IMF etc) and the Greeks have been allowed to get away with a partial default while getting a massive bailout.

If it was Irish backpackers I would understand. They are barely sober from the night before and then its off out again. No one I know will touch them due to reliability. Older PRs are fine.

My Aunt bought her plain little ex-guvvy in suburban Canberra in 2001 for $100,000. The (identical) house next door just sold for more than $400,000.

If you want to talk USD, the respective numbers are about $50,000 and $380,000.

I can't think of a "league" anywhere in the world to match that.

Wow, that's amazing. Our place in this country only gone up by 25-30% from 2002 to now PLUS the money we've spent on it - pool/extension/new kitchen. Had a place in Farnborough from 1999-2001 which went up 30% though :)
Sorry - slightly off topic there.

Yeah but fortunately Australia has its own currency and can dig gold from its own backyard.

As well as arguably the most famous alcoholic drink of all time.

It could have been Nige, when God made the world he gave them the choice potatoes or oil.......... the rest is history:o

By way of making things right I'll be drinking copious amounts of the aforementioned beverage this weekend in an attempt to boost the Irish economy:thumbup:

If you're in Australia you can see it on ABC's iView.
