Oh come come, it's been so long I suspect 'the-amoeba-with-a-keyboard' that started this post needs reintroducing to you. Stanton's such an intellectual midget that it took him no less than 10 years to realise he didn't like Australia. When the realisation dawned on him, he quit his job giving 'lip service' to tourists in Kings Cross ... sorry, he quit his 'management consultancy' and strode off in a big hissy fit to the epicentre of the universe - Harpenden (which he pretends is London). He now spends his days hustling tramps ... sorry, being a 'management consultant' and sharing his towering inadequacy with all those people on these forums who have emigrated to Australia and have the audacity to 'like' it.

Bullshit

Thats weird I used to travel from Milton Keynes to Fenchurch st everyday, back in the 70's even on the 90mph intercity, the trip door to Door to door used to take 1 hour 40 min, more like 2 hours 10 if I didnt catch the intercity .... 45 mins on the train Bletchley to Euston (before MK central was built) 25 mins from Stony Stratford to Bletchley station, and circa 25 mins Euston to Aldgate. Did that for a year before moving back to South Norwood where the 12 mile trip took about 45 mins. I work 7 mins from home now.

Are you teleporting the trip between your house and the station,.... or driving across empty dartmoor maybe ?

Yes I probably earn between 30 and 40,000 dollars less per year, but I gain 20 hours of leisure, compared to MK commuting, a week in not travelling.

Don't expect an answer any time soon - he's probably still stuck in a traffic jam on his way home from the home.

I must admit to gaining some smug satisfaction when bullshitartists are exposed. Even on the Midland tollway, you couldnt travel 62 miles in 1 hour 15 mins door to door.

Unless you were unfortunate enough to work and live in the toll booth either end.

Nah,

It is actually possible...I drive from J27 of the M6 (Chorley) to J16 (Hanley, Stoke on Trent), and I can make it door to door in 1 hr 15 mins on most days (unless there's an accident, or it's Friday evening), and that's 62 miles too (which is uncannily weird....but there you go). Doubt that the same time would be possible if you had to pass the M5 intersection or drive anywhere around London's M25 though...

Melbourne dull That says a lot about you and what floats your boat
I worked in the arts in Bristol and Bath and we would have killed for some of the cultural and arts programmes on here! I won't list the magnitude of many other non-dull aspects as you no doubt know the city and region inside out and still find it dull - never mind.

I'm still recovering from last years trip, when I had to drive on more than one occassion from Prestatyn to Mkeynes. I've got to admit to being Naive enough to have tried the M6 on a Friday afternoon. Trip took close to 6 hours. I actually had to detour through Stoke on one occassion, Hadn't been there since I travelled with Palace in the 70's on a boozy train trip.

I spent an incredible amount of time, and totally unexpected by me I've got to admit, In traffic jams on Motorways during last years trip. Visiting family from Hampshire through to Clywd and points inbetween.

I've got to say It was the only thing I really disliked about the UK though, the rest of my return trip after 16 years away was a pleasant eyeopener.

Don't get me wrong....the M6 is a nightmare...I have driven it for so long though that I know exactly when I can make this time and when I can't ... if I were tied to getting in for 9am I'm sure I'd be screwed, but I'm self employed, so I can gauge it to get in at 10.30 to 11 as I do some work prior to leaving Chorley. The M6 can be evil though, one accident and it's an instant traffic jam...worst time ever for the same trip was 4 hours (accident). Having driven in NZ, I can't get over just how crowded the UK roads are, but 60m people on one tiny island is always going to be a nightmare. Give me open space any day.....

This thread is BE gold.

I love reading PB's a MS's opinions as much as I love reading the opinions of those who love it here as I can agree with certain aspects of both.

Although I don't think that those who have yet to live here are in a position to criticise.

Anyone who's regularly driven anywhere in the UK recently will know you're bloody lucky if you get a fairly clear drive. My last commute in the UK was over a distance of just under 24 miles - from Nailsworth to Cheltenham. A46, M5, A419. Best time was 55 minutes, average was about 80 minutes, worst was four hours (multiple car pile-up in fog).

Some interesting snippets from the BBC regarding UK road:
It's estimated that a quarter of all main roads in Britain are jammed for at least an hour a day - compared to our neighbours in Germany and France, where that figure is less than 10%. In fact, a journey from London to Manchester (that's less than 200 miles) frequently takes as long as seven hours. That's an average speed of less than 30mph on roads with a maximum of 70mph. A fit cyclist, accustomed to lengthy periods in the saddle, could get there quicker.
The full article if you fancy a read of something other than fairy tales.
