His brother is Dave Thomas, who went on to be a TV actor in Canada and the States and they both went to university with one of my brothers.

Smile Re: 10 interesting things

  1. I am an identical twin.

  2. My maternal great-grandfather (Harold Newton) was the founder and first conductor of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra.

  3. My maternal grandfather was born in Norfolk, went to school at Wellington College, trained as a lawyer, served as Gunnery Officer on the HMS Taciturn during WWII, emigrated to Western Australia after the war (where he set up his own film company), received various international awards for his work (including a Silver Screen award at the International Film Festival) and became known as the "Grandfather of Western Australian Documentaries".

  4. My maternal grandmother was a stage actress, and toured Japan during WWII. She met my grandfather while they were both working for ABC Radio; he as a newsreader, she as a radio actress.

  5. My paternal great-grandfather was Chief Stoker on the HMS Khedive during WWI.

  6. My paternal grandfather was born in Southampton, served as an artilleryman in the British Army of the Rhine during WWII, married a German Pole, and eventually moved back to the UK with his wife and the child who was to become my father.

  7. My father was born in Kiel, educated at Dunstable Grammar School. An unwanted child (his mother attempted to abort him), he had suffered a traumatic childhood and left home at the age of 19, when he emigrated to Australia. His father's parting words were "We never really liked each other, did we?" He met my mother in South Australia, and proposed to her within 2 months (she accepted).

  8. My mother is an amateur playwright and published author, having written five books and several short stories. In 1980 she wrote a short film for the ABC (One is One) about two identical twins who are always being confused for each other. The leading actors were myself and my twin brother; my younger brother and sister also had parts in the film. I was 8 years old at the time, and was paid $100.

  9. From the ages of 5-8, my twin brother and I worked for ABC Radio, playing various parts in radio plays for a children's series called Let's Join In. We worked with Joan Sydney, who later went on to play a bossy matron in the Australian soap A Country Practice.

  10. My twin brother and I were the official chess champions of our high school. We were also members of our school's chess and debating teams. I went on to become a member of my university's fencing team, and came third in the "B" grade category during a state fencing tournament.

Some of mine are similar to others here:
    1. My paternal Grandfather flew Beaufort torpedo bombers from Malta and Mosquito fighter bombers over Europe in WW2. He sunk 3 ships, shot down 3 planes and destroyed 4 trains. He was shot down in Belgium in 1944 and was sent to Stalag Luft III (The great escape camp). In 1945 he witnessed the SS execute 14 of his fellow airmen including some of his friends.
    2. My maternal Grandfather joined the British Army at 15 and was sent to India soon afterwards. He was serving in Palestine in 1942 when he met my Grandmother who was a refugee from Czechoslovakia (she was not Jewish, we think she might have been a Communist). My mother was born in Haifa the following year.
    3. I was born in Zambia.
    4. When I was 20 I crashed my VW Golf through a brick garden wall whilst drunk, stoned and without a licence.
    5. I served in the South African Infantry between 1985-87. I spent a year on combat operations. I killed, was in a helicopter that was shot down and was in a friendly fire incident. One of my best friends died in my arms.
    6. I was chased by and nearly killed by a Hippo.
    7. I've met members of the bands Thin Lizzy and Supertramp, Ian Botham, Nigel Mansell and the SA cricket and rugby teams.
    8. I've travelled to every continent apart from S. America.
    9. I was 40 when my only son was born.
    10. I plan to retire at 48.
