Default Feeling a little nervous

After the recent double murder in St George, I'm feeling a little nervy. We've been here for about 18 months now and have always felt incredibly safe, but now we're wondering if we've just been naive.

We live in a fairly rural area and we are now thinking of buying a dog etc. I'm interested to hear how other expats/Bajans are feeling.

I initially felt a bit uneasy.. I still lock my doors at night, not that I ever stopped. but I sit with my back door wide open as I type this. I do have a dog, but even if I didn't I would still do it.

I know the family involved in the St. George Case and I've just learned today that, apparently the criminals intention was to rob the Chefette at Charles Rowe Bridge (not sure if that was an instead or that was going to happen after they robbed the Chatertons). My children and I and 2 of their friends just happened to be at that same Chefette at the same time. I was told they didn't stop there..becuase.. it was too crowded. Thank God for Crowds...

I will say this.. My sister lives in Jerusalem Israel. She goes out, she works, she does what she does because it is her life. If she didn't, the Terrorist who continue to do bad things to Israeli's there, would win. Well in my mind it's the same thing here. If you stop doing those things that you are used to doing here, or you leave the island because of what they have done, the Criminals have won. You decide. I'm staying right where I am..

How would you feel about not having a dog?

I'm asking because several Bajans have seemed rather surprised when we say we've not got one. One in particular seemed to think we were a little bit mad for not having one.

I've lived here for almost 19 years and have only had 2 dogs and that has only been in the last 5 years. Only reason we have one now, honestly, is a friend gave us one and then my brother in law's dog had a litter, and we fell in love with one. Not sure we will have another when this one decides to leave us.. hopefully later rather than sooner..
