First Update
Well here I am, posting my first update since I got back home last night.
Slept like the proverbial baby last night, the wind was howling outside but I slept right through it. Woke up at the ungodly hour of 5am, but tried to go back to sleep for another few hours. :) I haven't seen the lady who runs the B&B yet, but I've met her husband and he cooked me breakfast this morning which was a lovely way to start the day.....unlimited tea, full English breakfast and a full tummy at the end of it, all the while looking out the conservatory window watching the sheep. Already encountered my first hiccup though which sucks. As most of you might remember I was told the B&B had a flat attached that I could rent. All I had to do was get here and take a look at it and see if it would do for me. So this morning when I was chatting to Mr B I mentioned the flat. He told me they'd rented it out LAST WEEK to a friend who's wife had kicked him out. I felt gutted! It would have been nice if they could have told me this last week because then I could have started making other arrangements. I know I can't stay long term at the B&B because I'd pay double per week what I would have if they'd still had the flat. So now I have to go back to plan B and look at house shares ! This morning after breakfast I knew I had to get a few things so I decided to take a walk into Greenfield and pop into Tesco's. I thought it would be nice to walk along the canal, which would take me all the way through. But the wind was continuing to blow hard so I had that pushing in my face the entire way there. LOL It ended up taking me just over an hour to walk the 2 miles, but even with the wind I wasn't power walking. I was taking my time, taking in the views, the boats on the canal and all the ducks and geese. :) Once I'd picked up what I needed I began the trek back, making a slight detour to the Post Office on the way because I'd forgotten to pick up a pay As You Go sim for my mobile. I left at 9.20am and it was 12.30pm by the time I walked back in the door. So I'm just going to relax and have my sandwich and then get onto the task of finding somewhere to live. I would have taken my camera this morning and snapped some pics along the way, but I thought I'd do it next time, when I have the time and don't need to go to the shops for anything. It was really wonderful to walk along the canal, because everyone I passed stopped for a chat, talked about the bad snow and generally made me feel like I've lived here all my life.. Even the landlady at the pub came out when she saw me walked past and we had a chat. I can honestly say everyone has been lovely ! So there you have it...update number one ! |
Re: First Update
Thanks for update. sorry about flat  they could have let you know. However, I truly believe that things happen for a reason and perhaps a house share will be nice and you will meet more people that way and also be able to job hunt, sometimes jobs in small towns are by word of mouth! I am sure you will find a nice place, but take your time with your choice - looking forward to more updates!
|
Re: First Update
Thanks for the update all sounds wonderful. Sorry to hear about the flat but that's life. I am sure its karma and something else will transpire. You have had an interesting week :D
|
Re: First Update
Welcome home Whofan
It sucks about the flat but sounds like you are enjoying being home anyway. Hope you find a nice place you can call home soon. Keep on coming with the updates and the wonderful pics :) |
Re: First Update
I see this showed up finally  Even though I already had most of the news, it is great to read it again :) Now all you need is to get somewhere to live sorted. Don't worry, love, something will come along. You've come this far. Hard part's over
|
Re: First Update
Great update, thanks for sharing your adventures. That's too bad about the flat, but I'm sure you'll find something even better.
|
Re: First Update
Shame about the flat.
Make sure to mention in the pub and in the paper shop that you are looking for a house share or flat share or small place to live in. You'll find people making suggestions and letting others know. |
Re: First Update
So happy to read your update but really sorry about the flat. I'm sure it will all work out though. My favourite part - "the shops". Can't remember the last time I heard someone saying they were going to the shops. Here people run errands or go grocery shopping. You can help me speak English again before I get back in a couple of months!
So happy for you  |
Re: First Update
Great update love and yes, to echo others, shame about the flat - they could have told you! Still you never know, wifey might take him back soon and the little flat will be yours.
Sometimes though when you don't get what you want it just sets you off in a new direction which works out better for you. I'm sure with your fantastic positive attitude you will find somewhere else soon :fingerscrossed: Keep the updates coming we are all rooting for you and avidly following your adventures! |

Re: First Update
WhoFan - where do you want to live exactly? I have a friend who has large house in Scotland and she is now alone. Her intent was always to use her house as a B&B and she does sporadically. She only charges 20 quid a night. The house was former doctor's surgery and has 4 bedrooms upstairs and bathroom. Downstairs formal dining room, living room, conservatory, then in back all kinds of rooms where doctor used to do his surgery. If you are interested at all let me know. Even though she is 81 she acts like she is 51 and is someone who is very dear to me.. Just a thought..

Re: First Update
Good to hear your update (a full English sure sets you up for the day!). Sorry about the flat though, but they do say that as one door closes another opens wide for you! Onwards and upwards!
|
Re: First Update
thanks for your update. I hope you get someplace permanent to live very soon. Yum, a full English Breakfast and walking to the shops, luverly:) It would be hard to take such a long walk in AZ;) Take care, and wishing you all the best.

Thanks love, I do appreciate you thinking of me, but Scotland is just a wee bit too far away..lol. I'd love to stay in Lancashire and hopefully close to where I am now at the B&B, but closer to the shops and trains etc etc. Will have to see what transpires and what I can get :) But thanks again, mention this to Windsong and if your friend would take pets then I'm sure she'd snatch your hand off. :) |
Re: First Update
Ready for update number two?? Sit yourself down, make a brew and I'll start:rofl:
On my first night here I went to the Diggle Hotel for dinner as most of you know. I got to know the landlady really well and we'd chat while I ate. I went again last night and OMG the food, I had what was called Bury Chicken, which is 2 cooked chicken breasts and in between they have black pudding, cheese and bacon, and then more cheese is on top and it's all grilled. All served with a pile of chips. :) After eating as much of it as I could (I'm ashamed to say I had to leave most of the chips because I was stuffed because of the chicken.. lol), the landlady (I'll call her Ms A) came over and we started chatting again. She asked me how I was liking the B&B and apparently she had stayed here too not too long ago, but had to move out because it was too expensive long term. I found myself telling her about the flat and how it didn't work out and then you could have knocked me over with a feather when she said ' I have a little one bedroom cottage up the road you can have if you want?' Apparently she bought the cottage after leaving the B&B and then when the pub offer came up she moved out of the cottage and now lives in the pub. She even drove me up to take a look at it, which probably wasn't advisable because it's so darn cute! Lounge room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet downstairs and then you open a door and there is a set of stairs taking you upstairs to the bedroom. Its just up the road from the pub so still within walking distance of everything. The only drawback is the price. Apparently this is an expensive area to live (naturally..lol), so she wants £500 for the cottage and then on top of that there is all the usual bills and £125 per month Council Tax. So there's no way I could manage that. I'd be broke in 3 months ! Pity, because it's really nice ! But how nice of her to ask me! She said she wants someone there she can trust and to think she only met me 3 days ago.. We even talked about how I can't rent a place through an agent because they'd probably ask me for 6mths rent up front as I have no UK credit history and she said 'that's rubbish'.. lol She gave me the name of an agent and said to check them out and she'd even give me a reference/recommendation as she knows them! Nice to know I have options now !:thumbsup: |

Re: First Update
Update number 3 already! As much as I loved getting soaked and walking in the rain...I'm suffering for it now..so if you don't hear from me for a few days you'll understand why. At the moment I'm curled up in bed with my laptop on my knee, the radiator is on, I'm in my jammies and fluffy socks and I still can't stop shaking. I had a bit of a cough this morning, but didn't think anything of it...but during the course of the day it got worse, and now I'm hacking up a lung.. Ick !!! I think it was a combination of both the rain and the strong COLD winds that did it !
So it's Sunday tomorrow and I'm going to just curl up in bed, rub Vicks on my chest and cough it all out! I feel like death warmed up, but I'm sure with some extra sleep and plenty of fluids I'll be fine by Monday. :) Talk about being a wuss! I've just been in Arizona for so long that my body acclimatised to the heat and the warmth, so suddenly going from that to biting cold winds, rain and colder temps my body didn't know what was going on.. lol. It was 10C both days I went walking and it's 5C right now. Definitely not Arizona weather. LOL I'll talk to you all in a day or two, and hopefully have some updates on my time back home. |
Re: First Update
Great to read your updates. When you move to a new area...let alone a different country...your body comes into contact with germs it's not used to...therefore you tend to get sick easily. That together with the extreme change in climate is bound to play havoc with your body.
Stay warm and look after yourself...I look forward to reading update #4. :) |

If it is an expensive area, then have look on http://www.spareroom.co.uk/ for someone with a bigger house maybe and theres http://www.flatshare.com/uk-flat-share/index.html and http://uk.easyroommate.com/ If your lucky someone local may have something on one of these sites and you can ask the land lady what they are like  |
Re: First Update
What I find amazing about the UK that in 17 years I have not found here in USA, is how easy it is to strike up a conversation with people and get useful information from them.
I hope you find a lovely flat of your very own soon though and you sound as though (despite the rain, cold wind and now nasty cough) you're finally where you're supposed to be. It certainly looks beautiful there judging by the pictures you've posted :) |

Re: First Update
oh I hope you feel better. All the flying, time changes, climate changes will make you more likely to catch a cold. I hope you feel better SOON. I also am praying for you that you will find somewhere to rent soon as I know that is such a worry. When I moved back (for the brief time I did) I was fortunate that my sister knew the letting agency so they rented to me without credit checks etc etc . In the pound shops ( if there is one near by) they sold lots of different cold meds. Take care and so many are thinking of you and hoping all the best for you.

I did hear back from that one agency, but it doesn't look like they'll even consider me because of the lack of history. Oh well, at least I gave it a go, and it wasn't totally unexpected. Of course all the room shares that I'm contacting have already gone, but there's always tomorrow! Being Sunday things are on a go slow mode today.:rofl: Oh and if anyone is interested, Walkers Worcestershire sauce flavoured crisps are absolutely yummy.. I went back to Tesco's the other day and bought a 22 pack for £3.00 and they have cheese and onion, Worcestershire sauce, prawn cocktail, ready salted and salt and vinegar. Have to love on the packets when it says 'made with real Cheshire cheese' :D |

Re: First Update
Sorry you're sick :( Hopefully that will pass soon. I'm sure your body has gone into a bit of a shock because of the weather. I'm sure it was also hectic for the few weeks leading up to your move so now your body is asking for some calm!!!!! Drink lots of tea and stay warm :) I luckily didn't get sick after moving here from LA but my OH got a HORRIBLE chest infection.
Good luck with finding somewhere to live. we ended up having to pay a year in advance..............nightmare. Thank goodness our house sale in LA went through in time. Oh and yes the crisps!!!!! HEAVEN!!!!!! Walkers definitely are the best brand out there :) |

You had a lot of stress before the flight, then the flight changes and then the mighty trek across the atlantic with all that bad air circulating for 10 hours, then being in a place foreign to your immune system. Not surprising you had to take to your bed. Keep on keeping on, as my father used to say. It's all going to work out fabulously! |

Yes it will. I wonder if the B&B owners would consider giving you a reduced rate for a long term stay. Maybe they're doing that already or you've already asked. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

Re: First Update
Well here's a further update! :) I just happened to finally catch Mrs J (I'll call my landlady that for her privacy..lol) and mentioned to her about the possibility of me staying longer term. That's when she apologised for the flat not being available but as he was a friend they felt sorry for him and didn't want to turn him away! So I told her that I totally understood and would have done the same.
Anyway, I asked what would be the possibility of getting a reduced rate for just the room and not the breakfast, and I could take care of that for myself. She said "I can't see why not - let me talk it over with Mr B and see what we can do'. She went on to say they can even have a microwave put in the room for me so I can actually have warm meals at night :D So we had a good chat, and now it's up to the pair of them. I'll just have to wait and see what they offer. :) I've had a brilliant day today! I went out early this morning to visit a friend in Mossley, which was two buses and a train to get there. Not as bad as it sounds as it's a 10min bus ride for the first trip...the train only needs to go one stop and then the next bus takes less than 5 minutes, so it's not as though I were travelling for hours. LOL It's just a matter of co-ordination. Even though the sky was filled with rain clouds I'm pleased to say that I actually did the entire trip without getting wet. LOL. Once again I had fun chatting to people at the bus stop and even the bus driver dropped me off closer to the street I have to walk up to get to the B&B, rather than drop me off at the actual stop and have me walk up a slight hill. He said "its not much - but better than walking up the hill' We even had a joke, because I'm always the last one left on the bus and he said 'are you on the right bus love?'. Yes I replied. He went on to tell me that some people get on the bus without looking at the front to see where the bus is going and there are two buses with the same number. One terminates at Diggle and other goes through to Huddersfield. So apparently he gets people getting on the bus for Huddersfield and then looking surprised when they end up in Diggle, and vice versa! So that was my day ! I got to learn some new areas, new buses and caught the train for the first time. :) I've done it once, so next time won't be a problem. I'm good that way - once I learn how to get to a certain place I don't need directions after that. LOL Oh and I'm having a friend back in AZ pop into the local Wells Fargo and tell them about their £20 notes. They'd given me over £220 in old notes, which I only found out recently are no longer legal tender so they can't be used. Luckily I went into the Bank of Scotland (first bank I came to) and they changed them over for me. The lady at the bank was super nice and said that normally they ask that the person have a bank account with them, as they put the money in the bank and then they have to draw it out again, but she just looked around the bank and said 'Shhh, don't tell anyone' I'm now back in my room, large cup of tea in my hand and a couple of Jammy Dodgers and I'm ready for the night's TV viewing :) How was everyone else's day?? |
