Re: First Update
One of the many things I love about the UK is that going for a walk seems so natural and not a "have to do" activity. Whether it's walking to the shops for a loaf or rambling through the countryside, it's just more enjoyable and rewarding. You're very lucky Whofan to have the gorgeous scenery where you are :)
Here, the only walking I do is around the block with the dog. If I wanted to nip to the shops it would involve a minimum of 3 miles, busy traffic and no pavements. . .in fact I have done it in the past just for something to do and a few people stopped to ask if I was okay and needed a lift ! Walking here, most folk think your car has broken down as it's just not the norm to see anyone on foot. I've also found when I've been on my hols in England that because of all the walking, I lose weight despite eating loads of chips and chocolate :) Oohh I can't wait until I'm living there too |
Re: First Update
You've really hit the nail on the head there! I used to walk everywhere in the UK and, like you said, never even gave it a second thought. I used to go for a run or cycle down to the pier most mornings and as for shopping? Just used to sling my backpack on and walk along the seafront into town to get what I needed or take a stroll around the market. I used to stroll down to pick up my fresh fish, newspaper or fresh bread most days too - as you said just totally natural!
Here the sun shines every day but it's too hot and humid to walk anywhere unless you get up at the crack of dawn, I don't enjoy walking here due to that and also having to watch out for bloody snakes as well! When I was at home I ate whatever I wanted and I was always around a British size 10 now I'm pushing a size 14 and it makes me so miserable! I'm hoping the weight will come off once I'm home again and back into my normal routine!!!:fingerscrossed: Hope you get back soon, I've got 29 days to go now - tick tock tick tock!!! |

Last time I was home I went for a trek around the fields with my Mum, I love walking in the UK but I just find it too hot here so I'm not as fit as I used to be. Mum was strides ahead of me chatting away happily, I was red faced and puffing behind her and she was just laughing at me, she is 66 years old - oh the shame lol!:rofl::rofl: |

People would stare at me as though the sight of someone walking was just too weird.. Where I was in AZ having a car is a necessity because there was no local bus service so you either have to drive yourself or walk and in the AZ heat that isn't advisable. It wouldn't have been the first time I walked in the door looking like a cooked lobster, sweating profusely and feeling like I was about to have a cardiac arrest.. But here it's so normal and I see people out walking their dogs every day. If I want to go to the bigger shops in Greenfield it's either catch the bus, or else walk the 2 miles along the canal, which is such a beautiful walk I like doing that as often as I can. There are often places where there are no pavements, but you just stand to one side to let the odd car go past and they always wave their thanks at you as you go past. It's wonderful ! |

I think that once the weather picks up a bit where it's not raining every day I'll get out even more, although the rain hasn't even stopped me..:rofl: I'd be ecstatic to be a UK size 14 lol |

I know what you mean about eating, I don't eat much but I'm still chunky as! I truly think it all comes down to exercise at the end of the day. I'm sure the weight will fall off you and your fitness will improve with all that walking you are doing also I believe being happy helps too! I'm looking forward to my walks - the seafront, Alexandra Park and the East and West Hills near my house - hanging out for some nice walks but for now I'll just have to enjoy your lovely videos!!! |

I've never been a skinny minnie and I've always been happy with my curves but now I feel flabby, unfit and tired all the time - it's so yuk! I can't get into hardly any of my clothes either lol!

In the summer, I need to be out there by 6am. I love it on those rare days when it's overcast and there is maybe less humidity.

I can't even blame my shift work as it's never affected me like this before even when I used to drive an hour and half to work, do a 12 hour shift then drive home again! I've just got no energy despite all my best efforts re rest, good food and vitamins - I need a cooler climate and some nice long walks lol!
Oh, and I played the lottery for the first time yesterday and I won $25 (with a $5 investment). I could get used to this. Just have to be careful not to fritter away my going back home fund  |

Re: First Update
Whofan, re the weight thang. Have you had your thyroid checked? It is a blood test and low levels can result in weight gain. It's the drum I bang with everybody since I found out mine was hardly functioning. Apparently "women of a certain age" are prone to it! I joined a gym about six weeks ago and have only managed to gain weight! Pathetic!
Must admit I am not quite on a regime of healthy walks, but have done some hefty gardening. More power to you! I know what you mean about walking alone as you can't walk and talk at the same time, me too! |

I've been losing weight here and need to go and find all new warm weather pants/trousers (got to start talking properly ) I thought of saving a few of my favorites to ship with me in case I gain again in UK from all the pork pies and sausage rolls, but maybe I won't bother. |

If I won a huge amount I'd buy a massive place in the UK, convert it to nice flats and rent them out at a reasonable price to returning expats! I seriously think there's a gap in the market there just waiting to be filled!!!

Well here's a further update! :) I just happened to finally catch Mrs J (I'll call my landlady that for her privacy..lol) and mentioned to her about the possibility of me staying longer term. That's when she apologised for the flat not being available but as he was a friend they felt sorry for him and didn't want to turn him away! So I told her that I totally understood and would have done the same.
Anyway, I asked what would be the possibility of getting a reduced rate for just the room and not the breakfast, and I could take care of that for myself. She said "I can't see why not - let me talk it over with Mr B and see what we can do'. She went on to say they can even have a microwave put in the room for me so I can actually have warm meals at night :D So we had a good chat, and now it's up to the pair of them. I'll just have to wait and see what they offer. :) I've had a brilliant day today! I went out early this morning to visit a friend in Mossley, which was two buses and a train to get there. Not as bad as it sounds as it's a 10min bus ride for the first trip...the train only needs to go one stop and then the next bus takes less than 5 minutes, so it's not as though I were travelling for hours. LOL It's just a matter of co-ordination. Even though the sky was filled with rain clouds I'm pleased to say that I actually did the entire trip without getting wet. LOL. Once again I had fun chatting to people at the bus stop and even the bus driver dropped me off closer to the street I have to walk up to get to the B&B, rather than drop me off at the actual stop and have me walk up a slight hill. He said "its not much - but better than walking up the hill' We even had a joke, because I'm always the last one left on the bus and he said 'are you on the right bus love?'. Yes I replied. He went on to tell me that some people get on the bus without looking at the front to see where the bus is going and there are two buses with the same number. One terminates at Diggle and other goes through to Huddersfield. So apparently he gets people getting on the bus for Huddersfield and then looking surprised when they end up in Diggle, and vice versa! So that was my day ! I got to learn some new areas, new buses and caught the train for the first time. :) I've done it once, so next time won't be a problem. I'm good that way - once I learn how to get to a certain place I don't need directions after that. LOL Oh and I'm having a friend back in AZ pop into the local Wells Fargo and tell them about their £20 notes. They'd given me over £220 in old notes, which I only found out recently are no longer legal tender so they can't be used. Luckily I went into the Bank of Scotland (first bank I came to) and they changed them over for me. The lady at the bank was super nice and said that normally they ask that the person have a bank account with them, as they put the money in the bank and then they have to draw it out again, but she just looked around the bank and said 'Shhh, don't tell anyone' I'm now back in my room, large cup of tea in my hand and a couple of Jammy Dodgers and I'm ready for the night's TV viewing :) How was everyone else's day?? |

Well today I registered with a GP, so now that has the NHS number all sorted out. I should get that within a couple of weeks they said. :) Tomorrow when I go to the job centre they'll help with my NI number, so that will be another thing to cross off my TO DO list. I've opened a bank account and I'm just waiting for some paperwork to arrive so I can transfer my Australian drivers license over to a UK one.
It was so funny at the GP this morning. I filled out all the paperwork and they said I'll get a call about doing a health assessment (standard for new patients). I went in to see the nurse practitioner (just because I wanted to have something checked out while i was there) and when I left I went back to reception and asked if there was a charge. She smiled at me and said ' You're British..so there's no charge'. Try doing THAT in the US..lol. I'm looking out my window right now and the fog has come down over the hills and I'm waiting for the kettle to boil so I can make a cup of Yorkshire Tea :D I have a packet of Jaffa Cakes ready too! I can't print out my CV so I've loaded it onto a memory stick for tomorrow just in case they are able to access it. I've gone through it all and amended the spelling because it's so 'American':rofl: I'm looking forward to going to the job centre tomorrow because I know that once I meet my advisor they're going to be able to help me out and point me in the right direction. :) So that's my update for today. lol |

Have to agree there are not many big cities that most women would feel safe walking around at night.not even in Adelaide where I live, and that's more like a big county town.

WhoFan when you get the time and the money:) look into National Express or bus station. When Preston bus station was up and running I used to be able to take lovely day trips to Durham, and other places. I loved it because you get to see fantastic countryside, huge buses trying to make it down small lanes. Just a thought. It was very inexpensive as well..

Re: First Update
just a note about feeling safe. We live in the country, but we just got new neighbors. Last night we told our neighbor nicely that he has to use his own driveway and not ours. He told my husband he was going to "punch him in his face". Sooo now we are a little afraid. He has 2 pit bulls that we asked if he could keep on a leash. Obviously that is too much for him. He lets them run wild. We no longer feel safe with him and his weirdo friends coming over.

Hopefully he's all talk and no action and likes to act the tough guy, thinking that no-one will challenge him. I wouldn't recommend acting tough with HIM just in case he's the sort that will fight first and ask questions later..but don't let this bully make you feel afraid in your own area. Do what you have to do to protect yourself and if it involves calling the police then so be it. Do you have any big tough looking friends you can call over to go talk to him? Give him a taste of his own medicine??? Hope you get something sorted love...but don't be afraid...don't let him have that much power! He's just a bully! |
