Default 5 years Britiversary!

Was actually 13th July so I'm posting a bit late.

Well, hello to old and new members. I barely come on here anymore as life is just busy. Just have to say, I have absolutely no regrets returning to UK. I can't believe 5 years have passed, time has just flown by.
I felt instantly at home. Didn't at all think are we doing the right thing.
We rented a house initially for 2 years and then bought our own home in 2015. We live in a nice area surrounded by fields, which is great for walking the dog totally off lead.
Hubby still working in London which he is tired of now with the commute. He plans to continue another 5 years or so while youngest finishes school and college, then we will downsize and he will work more local.
I am hoping to start my own business, running a doggy day care. This is new to me as I have been a travel agent for most of my life and currently work at home selling cruises. I just feel its time for a new career now kids have grown.

We spent 6 years in Nova Scotia, Canada. I instigated the return home as my homesickness was just so bad. No-one else in the family wanted to return but acknowledged how unhappy I was.
I was great for the 1st year, then it started creeping in. We stayed for a further 5 years in which time I really tried. We did up the house, I loved my job, but it wasn't enough. Once eldest graduated, we were on the ship home.

We, hubby, youngest and I, returned to NS last year as my eldest daughter, although initially returning home with us in 2013, returned in late 2015 to try and build a life with a man she really liked. We were all apprehensive, but visiting NS was actually good therapy. Seeing friends again and being a tourist was great.

Life didn't work out for my eldest and she returned back to England early this year, which was amazing. We had actually been talking about living life 6 months in England, 6 months in NS, but unless my youngest returns there, we will not be doing now.

Anyway, as I said, absolutely no regrets here. Love the short hops to Europe that living here allows. Love the countryside, the variety in landscape. The oldness of everything. People crack me up. You can't beat the British sense of humour. Love BBC dramas and TV in general is better, although we do tend to still watch a lot of Netflix.
Summer so far has been stinking hot. The grass is yellow. A weird thing is happening today though...water is falling from the sky.

Good luck to all those returning, just do it!

Thanks Novo. I actually just read your update and it seems all is well with you. Good luck heading to France, you're lucky you are able to. I hate all this Brexit crap. I hate that we have to give up our EU passports. I feel I am very much European as well as British.

Great update Lorry! Good news about your daughter. Mine is getting married to an American so no chance for us on that score. I agree with you about Brexit. OH here on a spouse visa and wanted European citizenship as much as he wants British. Oh well, it may stink but it smells better than Trumpland to us!

Yes Lorry, congrats! I remember you and was preparing a return at about the same time...I came back at very end of 2013 so at end of this year 2018 it will be five years for me too. I am grateful every day that I am here! I love the same things you do—oldness of everything, short hops to Europe, landscape, history. Also I have family here, time with them especially my mother, is precious.

Thanks for the update! Maybe I will follow your lead and do one myself....

Lorry! Just logged back on here after many years away........ we used to swap a lot of info back in the day and I remember you coming to NS It is really nice to see your update and so glad you are enjoying it back in UK........ I've only been back a few times in last 8 years but I think we have decided when I retire for the second time in 2 years we will go back to UK. I think we realise now that its home (plus why would I endure Jan-Apr weather in NS if I had another option :-) Take Care

Really loved reading this post :-)we moved to Vancouver island 2015 and have loved many aspects of Canada like less people, less traffic, less crime, clean environment etc etc but have also missed british humour, sarcasm without offending people, decent TV, a good roast, the NHS (I am a Nurse) history / old buildings and villages but mostly friends and family. My dad passed away December and although I am aware that making big decisions after a loss is advised against I feel further away than ever. Did you notice negatives when you moved home? Did it take long to settle back in? Thanks :-)

Wow Lorry

5 Years!!! I also seldom come on here now! We came back in 2015 from Vancouver Island and I have no regrets. Hubby sometimes misses the salmon fishing but I keep telling him to take a trip over! We settled into an area we were in before because we had a house here, but are desperately trying to sell it now so we can move southwards to the coast! Glad your daughter came back. Having all the family on one continent is so much easier! One of these days I too will do an update! Take care
