Talking Young Psychiatric Nurse in need of advice...

Hi,

I am a psychiatric nurse and have been registered for just over a year, previous to qualifying I have 5 years pre-reg experience in a wealth of psychiatric inpatient settings.

I was wondering if someone/anyone would be able to give me some advice re: applying for jobs and where's best to work and live in oz.

Thanks
Will

Welcome to BE

Need to look at whether you would qualify for a visa, and whether you are able to register here, before you start job hunting.
Start with Australian Government Department of Immigration and Border Protection for visas, and www.ahpra.gov.au for registration.
Are you degree or diploma qualified?

Thanks Pollyana

I am degree qualified
Cool I will have a look at these now.

Do you know if there is any state that has shortages of psychiatric nurses at the moment?

No idea I'm afraid.
If you post in our Nursing forum here Nurses, Doctors, and other Medical/Healthcare occupations - British Expats someone may know more than me. Degree qualified is a great start, diploma qualified leads to all sorts of issues with AHPRA registration.

My friend is a senior psych nurse who cut his teeth on the mean streets of south London before moving to Aus for work about 7 years ago. Over here he has worked a number of regional placements, including Aboriginal communities in the Torres Strait islands and far west NSW. Apparently there is a desperate shortage of staff in regional areas and the terms & conditions are accordingly excellent (usually includes free accommodation). Couldn't tell you about the big cities but hopefully this gives you some idea of the regions
