You are ill informed. Barry Banana lost the presedential debate to Ivor Biggun and Mrs McClafferty's pussy was found with a Brazillian. It was unharmed but it was a close shave.

Oh how you mock.

They do cover other news. If it involves an Australian, or an Australian at a big event (such as Hugh Jackman at the Oscars who we could be forgiven for even thinking it was the Oscars and not the Hugh Jacman show, although I thought he did a very good job), or an Australian who is actually a Kiwi (like Russel Crowe but why let that stand in the way) or even if they like to stretch the point enormously and focus on someone who goes out with an Australian (like Orlando Bloom). However, Orlando is a pommie bastard and they mustn't say that, so they like to change this to 'adopted Aussie Orlando Bloom'. Then it's a story that has an Australian flavour because that's really all that matters.

Thank heck for the internet, ABC and SBS and satellite TV - actually, that goes for the majority of 7, 9 and 10's programming - complete and total shite unless you have an addiction to poor American comedies with their canned laughter that they obviously got on the cheap because no-one else wants them or 'great Australian drama' which is great because it has the world Australian and no other reason...

Someone who goes out with an australian yep thats all it takes, cant find a real one, howabout one someone is shagging. I love the way they hark on about aussies like elle, kylie, etc all folk who left aus years ago and probably never intend to return either Then they drag them back as aussie icons for olympic stuff etc.

Or sports hero stories. " AFL hero Aussie Dimwitt was stuck by incredible bad luck as he drove his porche while totally pissed past a RBT roadblock at 160 klm an hour then crashed into a ditch nearly killing himself ( and no doubt several families coming in the other direction but dont mention that bit ) . Messages of sympathy and support pour in for our latest pissed/drugged/violent hero, how can this happen to one of australias favourte sons.

World news in Australia?!

You can't even get national news here!!

Who cares about news when the reporters can give us live coverage of cruise ships in Sydney Harbour, or a series of stories about a crazy pig in the Sydney suburbs?!

The commercial stations - and now, sadly also the ABC - are so focused on entertaining people their 'news' stories are all about local happenings (the Sydney and Melbourne news, for example, only cover news about their particular city). Most stories will be about football or cricket players (and the footballers here spend so much time raping people and getting in fights there's quite a lot to report). Occasionally there'll be extensive coverage about a model launching a fashion line, or what a television personality is up to.

SBS does do a better job, but often I find their stories to take a bit of a strange bias - whenever there's a terrorist attack they seem to sympathise with the terrorists. But at least they have proper news.

It's become so much worse over the last decade. John Howard did a frighteningly good job of dumbing Australians down. The less people know, the more they can be manipulated.

At least these days there's the internet.

And Van Isla is on a distinguished road

The tedium that followed Hugh Jackman at the oscars.... Yawn!

From the coverage here it seems as though the Oscars were arranged only for the purpose of honouring Heith and Hugh.

Also channel nines "the mentalist" (which is rubbish) gets a higher rating then channel tens infinitely better "House", both on at the same time on Thursday...Why? Because as the advert goes "Australias Simon Baker stars in the mentalists". Of course House's Hugh Lawrie as we all know is clearly a pommie bastard and by default no where near as good. If it was Hugh Jackman instead of Hugh Lawrie however it would be pedestalled as the greatest character acting role since Rain Man and perhaps.. no probably.. no definitely the greatest australian... I mean american tv show of all time.

T'is a bit like the British wanting to watch British related shows

It may actually be because "The Mentalist" is new, whilst "House" is now getting a tad boring, with its repetition.

Higher rating by whom? I didn't know shows had ratings As for House, I've not watched the last couple of seasons, I'm over it, it was excellent first few seasons but it's very much repetition now. Not seen The Mentalist so can't comment.

As for news, SBS on the TV and CNN and BBC News on the internet. Don't know if it matters or not but I was talking to family about the troubles in Thailand, they knew nothing about it. Unless it's major world news, I'm not too worried if I know or not - I was much the same before.

I'm not sure it's an Aus thing - could be, I've not lived in other countries but I can't imagine the USA covering masses of world news either and my niece in Sri Lanka has little awareness of current world events when I talk to her.

we like to keep a keen eye on world politics and whats going on else where so are keen to find out how true this is?

could some one who's over there please enlighten us?
SBS is the way to go, in particular if you are interested in other countries and can speak the lingo. I thoroughly enjoy "Jim Lehrer" (American news, I'm not from America) on Saturday afternoon with Columnists Mark Shields and David Brooks.

But I read several foreign newspapers online. When it comes to news Australia is very selfcentred.

This thread made me laugh. My Aussie partner (fresh from 9 years living in the UK) has even noticed this Australia-bias in the news coverage.

The other day he drew my attention to a news headline - I think it might have been on the V music channel - "Brits snub Gabriella Cilmi". And the actual story was that Katy Perry won Best International Solo Female Artist at the Brit Awards.

It was a case of either they couldn't find an Australian angle to the story, so they went with this tenous link, or even, if you want to be subversive, the Aussie news team behind this heading choose to interpret it as the bad old Brits had a go at the Aussies by not choosing the Australian artist.

Whatever the reason, we just found it funny that the focus wasn't on the actual news story (Katy Perry wins Brit Award) and there was no acknowledgement that the winning artist won on her own merits/deserved to win.

OzTAM is the official source of television audience measurement
OzTAM is owned by the three metropolitan commercial television networks Seven, Nine and Ten
I assume they have a selected panel of people in the survey, it would be interesting to know how many...
A peoplemeter is installed on every TV set in each household.
It records and stores four pieces of information: time, TV set on/off, channel tuned, persons viewing.
All residents and guests register their television viewing using a remote control.
Panel homes are selected according to a statistical design which provides recruitment criteria that guarantee that the panel represents the Australian TV audience
2,334,000 watched Underbelly last week
1,839,000 watched Packed to the Rafters
etc... http://www.oztam.com.au/documents/2009/E_20090222.pdf
