Default world news down under?

my wife is currently reading book 'working and living in Austrila' she thinks the book is great but has an issue with an article which i've not heard of before.

it claims Australian news takes huge priority over world news to the extent that they dont really cover much world news at all.

we like to keep a keen eye on world politics and whats going on else where so are keen to find out how true this is?

could some one who's over there please enlighten us?

Australia Sports news takes priority over everything......especially if they have won something no matter how obscure the sport.

Coverage of world news depends on the channel but generally is poor.

Very true.

I'm lead to believe America has a new president, Mr Barry Banana, though don't quote me on it; on the news recently, slipped on between AFL preseason and Mrs McClafferty's lost her pussy.

I havent seen any news since arriving in australia 10 years ago..

there a program on every night called "Ten News at Five" - but its a magazine program that alternates between discussing sports and the plot of various Ch10 Tv shows....

Anyone in wanting news around here relies on a modern invention called 'The internet'

To be fair, ABC and SBS have plenty of decent news.

SBS World News is as a good as you'll find anywhere - comparable to Channel 4's evening bulletin. ABC also do a good job. But going to one of the other channels for your news is like expecting McDonalds to serve a nice pan-fried daurade royale, confit baby fennel, brown shrimp and lobster risotto.

Personally I tend to tune into either CNN or BBC News 24 on Austar.

I watch the local type news programmes on terrestrial tv and they are of course focussed largely on local news! For world news I tend to watch the Sky news channel and BBC World News and both of them give plenty of world news. I couldn't comment in all honesty on how much world coverage there is on the terrestrial channels, but definitely if you have cable or satellite tv then you'll be right mate!

I agree.

SBS can sometimes be a bit of a problem though, unless you speak all the languages, as they have country specific world news in their own languages.

Todays front page headlines on SBS:

Zimbabwe's Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai was injured and his wife Susan killed in a car crash
http://www.sbs.com.au/

and ....
AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said that negotiations are on the "right track" to keep David Beckham at the Italian club for the rest of the season.

Definitely as good as most serious news programmes. ABC news radio is pretty good as well, and for at least 12 hours a day the BBC World Service is streamed on that station. As I work from 1:00am - 6:00am Sundays I love listening to the 5 Live football commentary on the radio (sad I know!). Decent world news is out there you just have to look a bit harder than you might of in UK.

When a new migrant comes to Australia, they must realise that almost "Everything" will be a bit harder to find, at first.

It is a new country to them, and many of them won't know the differences in many things, and they need to spend time learning.

It is pretty much the same in many countries; imagine the Australian that moves to the UK, and goes to do the weekly grocery shopping in Woolworths....
