Unions have a stranglehold, productivity is poor and on the other side, temporary / casual employment in Aus is nothing short of exploitative. However once a few test cases have set precedence, then the dust will settle and the pendulum will swing more in the middle. For both employer and employee.
Agreed.

Agreed. At the moment she is the only one on their side with anything about them. I don't hold out much hope though. Her balls are in her head rather than between her legs

To be fair, that includes most leaders. However this may become his downfall. It was Thatchers, eventually.

That's all well and good in theory, but in reality someone always loses out. That's why governments tend to focus on the good of the majority. The minority have little or no voice

Also, as with workforce reform, Howard may lay claim to "no pain, no gain" i.e he has to "violate" society with workforce reforms in order to eventually improve matters overall.

One thing's for sure, there are always "casualties" in any changes

"Meatworkers get the chop", eh?

The govt has said it will investigate.

I'll be interested to see how this pans out.

I think that there will also be some rapid amendments to the laws, before the next election arrives.

You could well be right. Howard will do anything to get re-elected so he becomes OZ's longest running PM in office. This is why he won't resign.

Longest running PM in office? Maybe so - and good on him, I say! And why should he resign anyway, if people are happy to vote him back in?

Howard has been one of the most successful PMs Australia has ever enjoyed. He's done a lot of good for the country IMHO.

And I fear this is just the beginning of the 'new look' australia. They will have everyone working 60 hrs a week for $5 an hour if they get their way. It will just boost the finances of those in the top earning groups while screwing those in the middle and lower groups into the ground. Any surprise that Costello's budget a while back gave only tax relief to those earning $50k+ ?

The average income at that time was of course under $50k. So much for being 'the best friend the workers of australia have ever had' as Howard has claimed his government to be.

It's not that straightforward. A single income family with a couple of kids with an income of $50k & renting a property effectively pays no tax. Higher earners need some more tax relief as they are paying more tax. 40% of people in Australia take more out of the tax system than they put in.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I agree with you.

Australia has prospered under Howard, that's why he has been re-elected. Beazley is a Buffoon, Labour will not get into power whilst he is leader. Anyone who replaces him will have to become a Howard clone to get elected. Socialism is dying because in doesn't work. Capitalism works, lets give it a go.
