Wollongong or Shellharbour?

Wollongong or Shellharbour?
Hi all
I am moving to Wollongong area soon, I have work in Shellharbour but I can not visit before then, and would like to narrow down my focus for searching for apartments to rent.
I don't mind a smallish commute, so I was thinking living in central Wollongong would be a better bet with more to do out of work. I'll be busy heading out exploring the area but near my home I am looking for cafes, bars, somewhere with more energy and ambience in the evening than a small town.
So anyones opinion who know the places- Shellharbour and Wollongong and the surrounds, if my thinking about living in Wollongong is a better bet for that lifestyle, or is Shellharbour lively enough ?
BTW I'm a 50 yr old professional, so not looking for wild nightclubs or partying every weekend, but I would like the options of having things to do somewhere that is lively.
