Yes! Are you moving to NSW or visiting on holiday from interstate?!

Contrary to popular belief, Australia gets cold! You'll find throughout winter you'll be wrapping up a lot, especially at night. Coats are a must!

Hehe when you're in the UK it's hard to know - all you hear about are the fires and skin cancer problems. The temperature is much warmer by far than the UK averages, but from spring-autumn it can be chilly at night! I was in Sydney in September a few years back and it was nice and warm in the sun... but as soon as the sun went away or I was in the shade I was shivering!

I'd suggest bringing a good amount of warm clothes with you. The good thing is that this first year you might not feel the cold so much... but within a few years once you've become acclimatised... brrrr! I think for kids though it'll be good to have warm jumpers and jackets to hand. Good British made winter gear - can't beat it!

Good luck with the move!

Coats etc are essential!!
it gets down to 4 degrees at night and 12 ish during the day in midwinter (lower north shore Sydney) which may sound ok, but with a cold wind and virtually no insulation or central heating in houses you will really feel it.
Bring everything!!

Also kids acclimatise quickly- my 11 year old made us laugh by coming outside for supper in her coat a couple of weeks back. It was 23 degrees

It is funny, because of housing and acclimatisation it's not long before you accociate night temperatures lower than high teens with the need for woolly socks and winter duvets

I recall one night it got really cold, in Sydney, and ice had formed on the windscreen

Unlike Queensland, I did need a decent jacket in Sydney...

I remember when we landed in Adelaide in August '06. When we left Toronto it was 40 degrees. We landed in Adelaide 2 days later and it was 12 degrees. The 4 of us spent the first couple of days here snuggled together under a sleeping bag trying to warm up.

Don't bring winter coats. Bring lots of layers and fleeces. Having said that, I guess a winter coat is good to go out and have a fag or a quick beer on the deck when the kids/inlaws are in bed etc...

We live south of Canberra and get temps as low as -9 degs C on a cold winters night. -5 degs C is about the norm for us on a winters night.

I would pack some warm clothing.

Have a good trip

That's cold! We get a couple of nights of 0 every year. Down a dip, around the corner, they get -3. Normally it is say 5-7 degrees.

What makes me laugh is all the people who think that because we live a fraction higher than they do we must all freeze at night, and/or because we live in Melbourne. I think for us, the trees help, and the cloud cover keeps it warmer.

It's very Autumnal here now: definitely not shrts and Tshirts today!

We get snow about once every three years on average but it doesn't hang around long. It does freeze at night during July - September, with a couple of inches of ice on the fishpond.

Bring warms and the electric blanket!
