Re: Will the REAL Australia please step forward?
Blue seas not brown seas, actually with fish in them
The smell of the garden after its been raining The smell of gum trees in the heat Lack of plane noise The big skies Sandy beaches that you get all to yourself Proper surf Rosallas in the garden The sound of kookaburras The hooting noise of magpies |
Re: Will the REAL Australia please step forward?
Picking fresh mangies from the tree in the front yard then having them for lunch
Ducking for low-flying fruit bats in the twilight Recycling half your household waste Listening to the sound of cicadas in winter after a light rain, gives the impression of summer just around the corner Taking a bushwalk and walking through gum trees into a patch of rainforest and felling the temperature drop and the birdsong change Public BBQs Having your bags inspected as you leave Target or K-Mart; if I was going to steal I'd do it at Myer Going to the bottle shop barefoot Taking the kids in their PJs to Woolies for some cheap bread and a cheap chook near closing time Working out how to get the 8ft long palm leaf into the bin Hopping around the backyard in agony after standing on an ant Collecting plastic shopping ags on the ratio of two items to one bag Only buying beer by the carton Owning a fridge that is only for beer |

Things that opitimise Oz?
Clear blue skies that stretch from horizon to horizon. Friendly people who are geniunely interested to meet you. 22 degrees in winter and seeing locals wearing jumpers and jackets while holiday makers from Vic & NSW lie on the beach in swimwear :) Watching the sunset on The Spit in Mooloolaba while eating amazing fish and chips every Sunday night. Watching the trawlers unload a catch of fresh Yellowfin Tuna at the same place. Driving along, looking out your window and finding yourself laughing for no other reason than it's a great day, it's a great place and it's good to be alive (I can't be the only one who does that, can I?) Waking up on a morning and not dreading going to work (sometimes even looking forward to it). :) Free public BBQ's that are cleaned every day Being able to park everywhere for free. Watching my son growing up to be a confident, happy and outgoing little boy who has his whole life in front of him in this amazing country. :D Oh and everyone driving like they've only just passed their test. |
Re: Will the REAL Australia please step forward?
Driving at 80kmh on a beach for 35km as the surf rolls in.
Seeing people wearing thongs with untanned skin 'socks' Putting Christmas toys on layby in July Bringing a plate Twisties Putting your back out taking the yellow bin out after you had friends round for drinks |

At first its a surprise and so pleasant: "aren't these aussies so bloody friendly?!"... A few months in its: "God, this is so false, their bosses obviously tell them to say it..part of their job description..."... Two years on you realise: " Geez I'm glad we live here with friendly folk, who say 'G'day, how are ya' as part of the norm, rather than shop assistants who grunt at you and chuck your change over the counter......" :D Like thebear's HQ Holden and the real sports too. You can keep your A league or whatever it's called. I know the 2 countries are vaguely familiar. I know a Aussie/Yankee couple - both have lived in UK/America/now aussie. The Aussie says she had to keep explaining herself in the States, not in the UK. She said it felt familiar! |
