My hubby and I haven't a big circle of friends at all. But one couple who we had felt were quite close to us have seriously given us the cold shoulder since we decided to apply for visas. In fact, they haven't spoken to us for months. I am of the opinion that I don't particularly want friends like these.

I hope oz will be the place for us. We are hoping to settle on the sunshine coast September/October time. We are certainly give it everything we've got and at the end of the day - we have got each other and our kids and that's all that matters. A few other friends along the way however, would be quite nice!!!

5/10 for me.

I got really homesick when I was in Aus in the 90s, but don't think it would be a problem this time, as my life is very different now, but i still couldn't count it, because I don't know for sure.

I have found I don't need (or want) a large circle of friends. Most of those that are would be other birders.

I don't have family in Aus, but am very outgoing, so don't consider this an issue either.

Basically, what I'm getting at is that I simply can't give an answer to some of these questions. How they're worded counts for a lot.

1. You have a preference for many campanions and mates to share activities and like socialising (BBQs, etc).
Nope. We do a lot by ourselves, though do more things with friends here/have more friends, but this is due to different circumstances, not Australia as a country.

2. You have weak ties to family and friends in the UK. You may tend to have a life-focus on activities rather than relationships.
Yep, but my parents are coming back out to live too, so I'm happy with that(I don't want/need them living TO close though )
So, correct, activities are more important, I'm used to moving around, 'losing friends', relatives.

3. You regularly engage in an outdoor pursuit, like surfing, diving, snorkelling (as opposed to just trying it occasionally).
No, never been a sporty person, and don't even like the beach much.
I guess I enjoy going to National Parks though, but mostly just for quick visits, not major treks etc.

4. You can tolerate or enjoy extended periods of heat above 30 Deg C.
No, but 27-30 is nice. Your body adapts, though not if you're in the aircon allday (at work, in car, in house)

5. You have family or an existing support network in the same city in Australia (other major cities are too far away to be relevant).
Yes: old friends, new friends via forum, and my parents and brother moving back soon.

6. You do not have history of feeling homesick when away from home for extended periods.
Correct, I've always loved going on holidays, school camps etc. I've moved about 11 times in my 23 years, so nowhere is 'home' anyway!

7. You have no real reason to go back to the UK regularly.
Correct, not the UK Not Holland either.

8. You have lived abroad successfully before and not returned due to a need to get back to the UK for people, places or things.
Not applicable I guess.

9. You do not feel any need to live in an environment that is rich in history, heritage and culture.
Not as rich as Europe, no. There's plenty here to keep me happy.
Culture is the ways of everyone, a place can not, not have culture!

10. You have a job already that pays very well (in order to afford housing - which is similar in price to the UK in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane at least).
Pascal's job is good, mine is reasonable, but I'll get better, and we don't need much at the moment (no kids, and we're not big spenders)

No, I don't agree with a few.
Some are stereotype things, and you may have found them, but it doesn't have to be like that(you don't have to love bbq's and the beach to be able to live here happily. And you can live here happily, but still find it uncomfortable when it gets above 35 degrees.

Anyway, didn't read the rest of the thread, discovered it a bit late. really need to go to bed now!

Makes the decision far easier and better to get on with when you know you are here for ever. Just crack on with it!

Sometimes, I think that those who have a greater disposable income are far more able to 'throw in the towel', so to speak, because they have that financial " fall back ". Fine if that is what you are able to do and you can afford to...we were very careful, before we moved, to make sure that it is what we wanted ( for the long term ) and to put ourselves in a 'no going back' mindset.

Failure is easy, sticking it out and making it work is the tough part.....and I like a challenge. So far it's been exactly what we expected it to be....

I think the crux (sp?) of it, is that it really all depends upon how 'practical' a person, you really are. How much research you did beforehand and how much you are willing to accept that the grass isn't really any greener on the other side - life is what you make it.
An interesting thread and I think that you may be right about the disposable income. I also think that the often quoted "give it two years" is good advice. We are finding it difficult but we have only been here 4 months. It takes time to establish oneself. After two years we may well decide to return to the UK but it is too early to say now.

hahaha, Dagboy & I do that all the time (hes very involved with the school & kids, so he knows exactly who Im talking about) "OMG, I nearly got caught by mad Heather/yabbering Sandra/insert parent description, I had to turn around & pretend someone else called me/I forgot something/the kids were playing up just to get away!"

I'll even turn around & walk back into the school pretending Ive forgotten something to avoid walking through the gate & into the car park at the same time as someone

Yeah I know, Im still waiting for Dagboy to give one to me after last year's effort when I had to fumble through a 10 min conversation with the lead male dancer .

Hevs - you sound like you know far too much about this subject, anything you want to admit to the forum??
