As a social experiment I'd gladly try to live in Sydney on $100k. After one year I'll post my findings on BE. So could everyone please send $5 to....

But of course the location in Sydney is also very important...

$750k can get this in Sydney
or this
depending on location.

Or
$300k could get you this
or one of the little 1 bed units in this

That large one for $750k is in Erskine Park, Sydney, NSW
Population: 7,000 (approx)
Established: 1981
Postcode: 2759
Median Property Value: AUD $361,750 (2009)
Location: 42 km (26 mi) west of Sydney CBD

A reasonably nice suburb that I lived in for a few years.

Hornsby by comparison has a median house price of $575,000 at Feb 2010, and is more popular with the British at 7% of the population compared to only 5% at Erskine Park.

bit of a pain the way housing is going on over there, we have around 100k saved so far but by the looks of things gonna have to save around another 200k dont like the idea of having high repayments,

Oh who cares. Bloody finance obsessed rubbish. I recall some writing on here that it's not worth coming out unless you have a million dollars. Rubbish.

I'm on $50,000 at the mo as I'm working half time and we're just about doing ok. Sure I'll crank up to full time soon enough, and boot the wife out into work too. Property is the one kick in the arse that is expensive. The rest depends on how plush you want to live.

So how much do you reckon you need to earn (gross of tax) for a fairly extravagent lifestyle (eating out at mid-priced restaurants say twice a week, returning to the UK every year and another holiday on top, not heavily into clothes or gadgets, one small car not being used for commuting, no saving from income) if you have no mortgage/rent to pay in central Sydney? This for two adults, one working, no children.

I think it would require at least $200k, probably about $250k in fact. That does not need to be only one adult working though, if no children both adults can work. This would also allow some savings each month, I would not want to be down to my last $ every month, one needs to save for a rainy day.

Sorry I didn't see the bit about no rent or mortgage. I would need to live somewhere so no point excluding it.

I think most of these people think they are entitled to gold plated, jewel encrusted houses and cars.
I started $35K per year in Sydney. I have a masters degree. I was living in western sydney and it took 5 years for me to save AUD$85K without mortgage or car loans. My cousins in US with just a basic degree save USD$110k per year after tax.

With a mortgage, I would agree with Bermuda. Without, maybe knock a third of that off?

Yes, saving for a rainy day; saving for retirement; saving for children's University fees..... I can't see how even $100,000 is enough after taking all these into account as well
