Anya.
UK has always been about inventing, but not being good at commercialising. Without doubt, if you want to experience leading edge IT, you should go to the States.

But, going to Oz is just a case of out of the frying pan into an even bigger fire.

At least in UK we hold people with brains in higher esteem than they do in Oz; where sporting heroes are 'sacred'. That's why programs like University Challenge - 42 years and still going strong - are so popular in the UK. In Oz, you'll get the new quiz program, 'The Einstein Factor' - the cleverest thing about it is its name.

In the UK people are more likely to take the piss out of Beckham+Posh than Stephen Hawkings - at least we have a better sense of priorities. On the other hand, Jonny Wilkinson...

In 2000, Oz brought in something pretty similar to IR35 - it effectively treats contractors like employees from a tax perspective.

Tim Berners-Lee went to CERN to carry out physics research with the atomic accelerator - as a schoolfriend of mine did. As far as I'm aware Berners-Lee did not leave UK 'to be innovative'. He developed what became the www to fill a specific need - to enable scientists around the world to share information electronically.

In my opinion England has stopped looking after the majority and now only cares for the minority......but its Ok the tax payers can pick up the tab !

A country run by do-gooders and bollocks to the rest.

Anyone can come here healthy, sick, clever or dumb we dont care!come on in we'll put you up at the 'UK International Hotel and Hostel'..

I have never pretended that Australia does not have the general problems that the UK has, but the FX rate allows a family to buy that nice area. Leaving aside the moral issue of that taking a home away from an Australian.
Given the general glut of housing in Oz (except some areas), you are probably doing a social service

... but it took Australia for me to realise that the UK has a 'sick' social fabric.
And you don't think that Oz's social fabric: one of the highest youth suicide rates in the world; appalling racism against its indigenous people - represent a 'sick' social fabric?

I seriously think there is a kind of repression in the UK which becomes obvious when you visit 'self-confident' countries like France and Australia.
Having worked with the French for 3 years, give me the Brits, Aussies, Americans any day! The French (especially the farmers) seem to have a real 'dependency culture'. It probably explains why unemployment in France is so high (double) compared with UK.

Aussies show 'self-confidence' when it comes to sport, but precious little else...
