Default Why Costello should scrap negative gearing

For the budding property millionaires , a debate has started on this rort beware what is talk today could be law tomorrow.

The Government needs to prevent a housing bust. Here's how it might be done, writes Tim Colebatch.

The biggest risk to the Howard Government's chances of winning the next election is the possibility that Australia's long economic boom will go bust.

As Reserve Bank governor Ian Macfarlane told the parliamentary economics committee last month, the main threat to the economy is the unsustainable growth in home lending and house prices. In six years, our after-tax income per head has risen 27 per cent. But average house prices have risen 85 per cent, and our housing debt has doubled to almost $400 billion

Perhaps you mean negatively geared shares where losses are set against other income.

I have no problem with negative gearing, a fool and his money will be parted one way or another if they insist.

Setting losses against other income, although seemingly reasonable, encourages peculiar behaviour, namely growth speculation rather than value speculation.
