Absolutely.

The bridge was designed and the construction managed by a British company though...so it is a British bridge.

But Australia needs to take them from the United Nations Refugee Program - displaced families from refugee camps, I'd personally roll the red carpet out for them. The ones I'm opposed to are the young men whose families have paid people smugglers to get them here and who once are in bring their families over. The ones that keep turning up every day since they realized Australia had become a soft touch, just like the UK.

This was Howard's policy - and it worked. Now that we have a softy socialist government that has removed this policy, we are seeing the people smugglers return - and they will keep coming.

Thank you for your comment. I think even if the rate is growing steadily, the total portion of Asian in Australia is under 5% (3%? 7%? I don't know exactly.) I do not intend to induce these some serious arguments. I've never met any British people. My current English teacher is Australian and his grandparents were British. I just wanted to know the different idea on Immigration, because I have little chance to understand other people from other countries. I know a little bit about Australian history so I think I understand a little bit what you are saying. While a lot of Korean regard immigration as life changing decision like marriage, I think it seems that some British people just think it a kind of moving house from town to town. Please don't get me wrong and please understand the reason why I ask this question.

Anyway thank you everyone for all of your kind reply/answers. I feel a little bit guilty when I see some unnecessary arguments. Maybe the way I ask this question was wrong. I didn't expected this. Is there any way closing this thread?

Imply Dorothy, Moneypenny and Pollyanna are all women of questionable virtue. That should do it.....

Don't feel guilty Sunitram. Yours was a very innocent and straightforward question but you can't always control the way in which a question is answered by others.

Why does it need closing? Can't it just die a death like the majority of threads? You're hardly to blame for people going OT. Most threads in Australia and Barbie do. Don't worry about it.

Most probably, but you can adjust, just like we did moving from South Africa to the UK - it takes time. It also depends what your expectations are. For us its mainly the following (compared to the UK):-

Much warmer weather
Bigger houses - room sizes
Outdoor life - camping, swimming in the sea, hiking etc...
Beaches - where the average grain of sand has a diameter of less than 5cm

These are things we grew up with and miss the most! We've got over missing the family bit. ;)

I also moved from South Africa to the UK several years ago so can relate a lot to what you are saying and share the same expectations as you. In a nutshell I want to live in a country that offers much the same as South Africa - minus the mind-blowing social and political challenges.

I'm S.Korean who applied 175 visa this year and still I'm waiting for CO assignment. While I was waiting, and getting a lot of valuable information from you after having found this forum, I was just wondering why so many British people want to go to Australia.
As a Korean, I myself have a dream of living in well developed country and having more job opportunities. Probably the most of you have never heard about S.K, and truth is working condition here is not comparable in A. or UK. I strongly believe that the most of grown Korean think about immigration if and only if they have a chance. Fortunately I can speak just a little bit better than average of my people (for Korea is kind of isolated country with our own language and characters, we don't have a lot of chances to be exposed in English daily lives), so I could have a chance to apply.
But, Why British people? UK is, in my thought, one of the most wealthy and powerful, effective countries in the world. You have fantastic living standards and good nature, aren't you? Why do you want to go to Australia?

(If this is already answered question, please let me know how to find it and I apology in advance)

Because Australia was colonised by the British, culture is the same, most Australians have British ancestry and the weather is better than the UK.

Funny that the wealthy aren't leaving in droves.

[QUOTE=renth;7716165]What are you a bond trader or something? Most people I know in the UK struggle and the ones who came here work just as hard as they did in he UK but have a much better lifestyle

Nope i am actualy a tradesman, born in a council house and went to the local comprehensive as did many of my friends. Many of said friends now are succesfull business owners in a wide variety of professions and have a very comfortable lifestyle.
Sure times are tough right now, Britian has been hit hard by the global financial crisis, mainly because it was such an important player in that market, financials is probably Britians biggest export earner.
Britian doesnt have vast mineral deposits it can dig up and flog overseas to earn export revenue. But recessions come and go and Britian will face the same challenges as most other western economies.

Of course not - why would they when they can afford 2nd homes in LA, Switzerland, South of France etc.

The wealthy in any country generally don't leave.

I wasn't talking about Korean history. I was referring to those stupid comments about the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
