Another thing to consider is that Australian basic/minimum wages are high which obviously pushes up costs for everyone. Someone stacking shelves in Woolies is likely to be making $18 an hour on casual rates. In the U.S. they'd probably be making half that. Australia's still a remarkable equitable place where the low skilled get a good deal.
its only the politicans that make it up |

That's such a dull and ultimately empty answer. OBVIOUSLY Australia is not London - we know that. No one is actually saying ''why isn't Sydney identical to London?'' - they are asking why something is absent/different in Australia, which surely they are allowed to consider.
We can still ask why Australia lacks something that the UK has without saying that we want them to be identical - that response is lazy, cheap and predictable. It doesn't answer the question but merely evades it. If an Aussie asked why the check-out assistants don't automatically pack your bags for you in UK supermarkets I wouldn't turn around to them and say ''cos this is the UK and not Australia''. Why?? Cos that's a childish retort and not an answer. And why does the UK not have Myer or David Jones???!! That's easy!!! Cos they're crap compared to the equivalents in the UK. |

The Yanks should get some Aussies in charge of their economy and sort it out, in OZ there was no recession and no banks or companies collapsing |

January 14, 2010 Australia's unemployment rate at 5.5 per cent in December 2009: ABS Impressive numbers indeed, no need for you to embellish them. |

I also went to the fruit n veg shop - it was cheap although a lot of the produce was crap - much worse than a supermarket! Brown onions were 5 times your oft quoted price. However I did pick up a nice loaf of multigrain for $1.49 - do I get a gold star?
A gold star for an average price for bread ? Hmmm... One of our fruit shops started selling crap fruit and veg once, it closed down soon after, as the other one took over the sales  Customers determine the result... ;) |

When do you get a decent beer like Stella for $10 or less in Australia? Never. Can't even get 6 shitty VB's at that price. |
