It used to be that Mr and Mrs Poor from Poorchester could come to Australia as ten pound poms and upgrade quickly, easily and dramatically.

You will probably get a slightly bigger property for your money in Australia in terms of square metres, but that's about it now. You won't be going from a tiny flat in England to a huge, self-built house on a nice big block of land as many in the past were able to do.

It's because of what people were able to do in the past that Australia has the reputation for cheapness that people still get swept up with today. But times have changed and the cost of living in Australia is now comparable to the cost of living in the UK and it really now just comes down to your need (or otherwise) for hot weather and beaches.
Or the need to marry an Aussie (who would not consider living in the UK ... we are well matched) and bring up your Aussie daughter.

Dat kind of ting.

Your other points are well made though

I went from a $180,000 poky flat to a $315,000 three acres a few years ago. Can't say I've compared the cost of living at all since ... no point really.

Well from where I have come; things are about 2-3 times expensive but then the wages here are 8-10 times more...keeping in view for me Australia isn't that expensive...besides the world is going through recession and due to inflation cost of living has gone up around the world...

I hope u will get that much wages too...

this question is quite relative...for some people who have higher wages over here wouldn't find the expenses much...

but i doubt uk would be much cheaper now, after the recession...

You are right, hence why some people prefer to talk about the high cost of rego, ignoring the insurance aspect, to show that someone saying "that combined Rego and Insurance was cheaper" is Wrong

Answer: Nope. Not found that either.
Registration and Third Party Insurance in Australia, should, if comparisons are to be made, be compared to UK Road Fund Licence and the compulsory Third party Insurance component. I assume it is still illegal to drive in the UK without that ?

I didn't actually forget. (and remember, the UK registration costs normally quoted exclude TP insurance)

The original question was about Rego and Insurance combined, the first answerer decided to remove insurance from the point, so I followed suit, and removed ALL insurance from the point.

Should we get back to to the total combined Rego and Insurance costs again.
Probably similar to the UK for many people.

Bottom line though:
Australian Rego PLUS third party insurance is more expensive than UK Rego EXCLUDING third Party insurance.

Wouldn't know about that as we don't have road worthies here.

A struggle with a local mechanic, no, surely not !

Imagine that. A mechanic who wants to make money. What? They should work for free?

I think he is a bit high there. The larger call centre 'phone answerers' are about $45,000 in Sydney now.

Although Insolvency Graduates, fresh from college, only get about $42,500

Business Services and IT Audit Graduates with No Experience $44,000

Accounts Clerks School Leaver $38,000

I save around $40,000 p.a. on school fees (what I paid overseas in 2008-09) and I find that the quality of education (practically free) they now receive is superior to what it was after paying those fees.

This subsidises all my other living expenses in Mel

Not UK. In the UAE but in schools that had the British Curriculum.

"Sold"? "Sold"? Who is doing the selling? The assisted migration program ended a long time ago.
