Why Australia is Expensive?
#241
The bottom line is that, in 2010, you need the same kind of finances to have a good quality of life in Australia as you would need to have a similar quality of life in the UK.
It used to be that Mr and Mrs Poor from Poorchester could come to Australia as ten pound poms and upgrade quickly, easily and dramatically.
You will probably get a slightly bigger property for your money in Australia in terms of square metres, but that's about it now. You won't be going from a tiny flat in England to a huge, self-built house on a nice big block of land as many in the past were able to do.
It's because of what people were able to do in the past that Australia has the reputation for cheapness that people still get swept up with today. But times have changed and the cost of living in Australia is now comparable to the cost of living in the UK and it really now just comes down to your need (or otherwise) for hot weather and beaches.

Dat kind of ting.
Your other points are well made though

I went from a $180,000 poky flat to a $315,000 three acres a few years ago. Can't say I've compared the cost of living at all since ... no point really.

Well from where I have come; things are about 2-3 times expensive but then the wages here are 8-10 times more...keeping in view for me Australia isn't that expensive...besides the world is going through recession and due to inflation cost of living has gone up around the world...

Statement: Total cost of tax (rego) plus insurance for car - cheaper.
Answer: Nope. Not found that either.

The original question was about Rego and Insurance combined, the first answerer decided to remove insurance from the point, so I followed suit, and removed ALL insurance from the point.
Should we get back to to the total combined Rego and Insurance costs again.
Probably similar to the UK for many people.
Bottom line though:
Australian Rego PLUS third party insurance is more expensive than UK Rego EXCLUDING third Party insurance.

In USA (Virginia) the driving license fees is $1 for 10 years and in Victoria Australia the seller must provide the buyer with road worthy certificate. This road worthy certificate require a struggle with a local mechanic. The mechanic want to make as much money as he like using this mandatory requirement....
A struggle with a local mechanic, no, surely not !

I save around $40,000 p.a. on school fees (what I paid overseas in 2008-09) and I find that the quality of education (practically free) they now receive is superior to what it was after paying those fees.
This subsidises all my other living expenses in Mel

I don't think expect it to be the same. They are definitely sold the expectation that at the very least their standard of living will be the same or better. Unfortunately for a lot moving from western Europe or North America the reduction in the standard of living is a shock!
