I think it is unlikely that any official lending source in Australia would allow that kind of borrowing, however if you are hanging out with the types who borrow from loan sharks it would be possible. Banks are quite strict with the loans they make to individuals. Of course is you are some corrupt corporation whose Chairman is mates with the Bank Manager that is ok.

As for UK debt levels, don't go thinking it is much different. Taken from the below website.

I looked up what was referred to as "the level of debt". I find myself with some serious concerns about the way that debt is accumulating in the United Kingdom. I discovered that, thanks to the Bank of England, data have now been produced to show that British households are on course for record-breaking debts of £800 billion, making them the most indebted in Europe. It may well be that lower interest rates have caused an increase in borrowing and, on average, those with mortgages now have total loans of nearly £63,000 each. I am much more concerned that on average individuals have £1,500 outstanding on credit and store cards and £3,000 on other loans

I read similar reports about the UK debt levels, but what they fail to say is that people have significant assets to support those debts and that debt to asset ratios are no worse than they have ever been. Its just the hysterical negative British media dredging up doom and gloom stories, as usual.

Vicky, the banks here will get you into debt!! They are terrible. I recently went for a mortgage. I only wanted to borrow a very small amount - $60 thou (AU)as I'm basically paying for my house in cash with my own savings (I hate debt)... anyway they wanted to lend me 600 and something thousand, almost 700 thou! ... there's no way I could pay that off! It would take me years of scrimping and saving... they hate lending small amounts, they don't want you to pay off your house in a couple of years, they want you to take 25, 30 year loans.... it's more money/interest for them.

The Government here has even pulled the banks up on this a few times... they are lending too much money here to people who can ill afford to make the repayments.

My mate has just bought/built a house, now he's not wealthy at all, he's in the low income bracket, has 6 kids! His mortgage is almost a hundred per cent loan (he used his 14 thou grant for the deposit as he had no money himself), he keeps adding to the loan, new car etc... it's ridiculous what he has borrowed, and this is borrowed from a major bank... they want you to borrow.

cheers

We were offered 5 times our joint salaries by one bank Westpac (we didn't borrow anything like that much in the end). They basically asked what CBA would lend us and said they could lend more...whatever we wanted, within (limited) reason! Personally, I think they lend too much and that when interest rates eventually rise, a lot of people will be in trouble. When they made the offer, my wife hadn't even got a job. They based their offer on the salary she made in the UK and applied the full conversion rate to it, assuming she would be able to get that in Sydney!!

Very easy to get money here for rental homes they use a bull figure linked to equity in your home, last time I moved house the guy at the bank tried to sell the idea to me , without a rent coming in every week no way I could pay the repayments even with it we would be broke with a 600K mortgage around our necks and the rental market is iffy right now.
Credit cards are taking over in Australia also its a live now pay never land , interest rates are always higher in Australia only 1%right now but when we came they were 5% higher.
the way house price have taken off in the UK equity for most would be better than in Australia so its not all bad there is it.

OK PB, I guess you can put that whisky on the shelf, coz I have read all the ABSOLUTE CRAP that you have written about WA and have held off saying anything for the last two months. Now all I can say is that you are a bitter son of a bitch that should piss off out of Australia and never come back. We don't need some f@ck head like you there. You have done nothing but put OZ down. Why the hell are you there - yeah I know u r going home - why not 5 years ago????r u that thick that u could not work it out earlier that u were not happy....dir..... . I was nice to begin with, when you slagged my home off, but you have gone beyond a joke. BTW where do you work, so I can tell your boss how you spend your days.

I am going to the OB when I get there, but there is no chance I will be asking after you, shame - in the beginning i wanted to meet you, now I wanna kick your head in.

There is only so much shit someone can read... Go back to UK and see how u fend there, bet we never hear from you again on here, maybe you will appreciate OZ when u have been back to "THE GOOD LIFE"...H A H A .............

Took me a long time of reading your shit to write this. I will cheers u in the OB.............

BYEBYE....

This is not the real Sue I have been a little bit hard on you , sorry but it does come easy to have a go at WA shame on me .
Bitter I hope not and I will miss the God Zone as its been called only because of some of the people I have met here , as I have tried to explain life is limited in WA , could be the reason that you are in America ?
My boss cares not a jot about his employees far too much of a class system here for that no hands on , spents the day re-inventing what the company should be without knowing what it is.
But I like your style and I shall be honoured to stand you a drink you have every right to defend WA as I have to knock it.
I did a lot better in the UK sorry to say for a good many years but have given your country more than enough of my time on this planet plus never taken any hand outs and have worked and paid my taxes unlike a lot here so I have given all I can.

Iagree vicky. However sounds a bit like the national lottery in uk.Was supposed to provide us all with among other things better sporting facilties and encourage more children into sport.Cutting of grants and selling off school sports fields is what`s actually happened.Gambling it is and also a poor mans tax. jockney

Booze is very important to your Aussies why else would they sell beer in blocks of 24-30 instead of 6 packs , and I must admit to spending more of my income on it here than the UK only because its so expensive like most other pleasures in the land of plenty.
Drinking in the UK is a social thing heres its must makes the place liveable, I enjoy Pub drinking unlike the locals who sit in their back yards and drink to be anti-social to anyone near them true piss heads.

I'm sure you would think drinking in backyards anti social if you don't get asked ANYWHERE by ANYONE. Nearly every weekend a group of between 6 and 25 of us get together, for parties, barbeques, picnics, day trips or weekends away. We meet loads of new people, see lots of new places, in short we have a life.... compare that to sitting in the SAME seat, in the SAME pub, moaning about the state of your life to the SAME people every weekend...Who's anti social, (and bigoted and small minded) now?

I would rather be in Perth than in the US any day. The reason I am here is for the experience and that is all. We were a lot better off in Australia than here. And we can move back any time we want, but while we are over this side of the world, we are travelling and seeing as much as we can. That is one (and there are not many) of the advantages of being on this side of the world. I think you are going to be in for a shock when you move back to UK.

Get the hint PB- we all hate you, and at the risk of being censored 'GO FORTH AND MULTIPLY'- preferably in the UK though!!!
