The only exaggeration I have read on this forum has been by the dreamers , I understate most of my points good or bad.
Booze is very important to your Aussies why else would they sell beer in blocks of 24-30 instead of 6 packs , and I must admit to spending more of my income on it here than the UK only because its so expensive like most other pleasures in the land of plenty.
Drinking in the UK is a social thing heres its must makes the place liveable, I enjoy Pub drinking unlike the locals who sit in their back yards and drink to be anti-social to anyone near them true piss heads.

We lived quite comfortably in Perth PB, had a house we lived in and 2 rental properties and I was only on pittance pay. I never budgeted, but knew how to spend my money. I was never short, well maybe occasionally, but not often. We both owned our cars. As for drinking in our own back yard, it is not an anti-social thing, it is just cheaper and you usually do it with a bunch of friends. We had BBQ's just about every weekend at each others houses, so I don't call that anti-social. Why waste money at the pub, when you can have more fun at home with friends. THey sell 30 packs in the US, so does that make them a bunch of p@ss heads too?????????.....oh and also in Malaysia they are sold in 24 packs and that is a muslim country. Guess they are real p@ss heads

Big deal, it is not all about the money, it is also for the experience. Grab a brain and wake up.
i agree with you there suebo. im not moving to oz because of the money. no dowt i`ll earn alot less than i am now but its the whole living in a different country and experiencing there ways of living that appeals to me more. it woudnt bother me at all if i lived in a pokey 2 bed house as long as i am happy and enjoying life.

It would certainly explain the lack of articulation and relevance that nay of his posts have!!!

All good reasons to be in America now , come on Sue the worst piss heads I 've met on the planet are Aussies and I've met a few .
People live in their backyards because thats all they can afford the debt levels here are beyond a joke.
Keep defending good old Perth from your American bolt hole wish I was there with you , most Aussies with any sense ship out like your good self.

These figures are up until 1995, I haven't got any recent figures. It seems Aus just pips the UK for drinking which isn't surprising considering most of the populated places in Aus, Brisbane etc are warmer than the Uk ... so naturally beer etc will be consumed more (I drink more here in Aus, and drank more in Asia than I did in the UK... it's the warm weather... that's my excuse anyway )). I'm surprised Russia and Poland is lower down on the list than the Uk and AUS though.
Regarding the 24 packs, most of the countries (S.E.A countries) sell them in 24 packs, although you can buy a single bottle/can of beer in most booze shops in Aus and in Asia,, also depending on the drink... take kilkenny, or the specialised beer... they come in packs of fours too, besides the slab of 24 (in Aus).
I do think it's a lack of money thing though about not going to the pubs ... in the night here where I am the pubs/hotels are empty, and a lot of them close at 9pm, but if you go to the local RSL , or any club etc they are full... guess why? Pokies! The Gaming rooms Pokie machine rooms are always packed with gamblers, you go into any club/RSL around here and the machines are packed with people sitting there all night, slotting their money into the machines almost trance like, very anti social! I can't understand it myself being a non gambler... Australia has a huge gambling prob. So the gambling thing fits in with the "poor" people/lack of money theory (they also have huge credit debts here)
According to a Productivity Commission report (1999), Australia had nearly
180,000 poker machines; 21% of all the gambling machines in the world
• About 82% of adult Australians gamble, the highest rate in the world. 40% gamble at least once a week. (p.8)

Unfortunately the various government bodies in Australia love those unfortunates who are addicted to the pokies because it gives them lots of extra taxes to waste.
Personally I believe pokies should be outlawed everywhere except in the casinos. Having them in the pubs makes it too easy.

This is one hell of a bit of reseach well done the Aussies beat us again at the only sport I now par take in , what a downer you are right about the pubs its very exspensive to spend all night drinking here so about 9pm most are empty .
The debt levels here would not be allowed in the UK , had a mate who was allowed to borrow 12 times his income for a rental after 12 months he was poorer and wiser .
The gambleing is a problem its the only hope for many mores the pity , wheres me lotto ticket .

You state the debt levels here would not be allowed in the UK , had a mate who was allowed to borrow 12 times his income for a rental after 12 months he was poorer and wiser
I think it is unlikely that any official lending source in Australia would allow that kind of borrowing, however if you are hanging out with the types who borrow from loan sharks it would be possible. Banks are quite strict with the loans they make to individuals. Of course is you are some corrupt corporation whose Chairman is mates with the Bank Manager that is ok.
As for UK debt levels, don't go thinking it is much different. Taken from the below website.
I looked up what was referred to as "the level of debt". I find myself with some serious concerns about the way that debt is accumulating in the United Kingdom. I discovered that, thanks to the Bank of England, data have now been produced to show that British households are on course for record-breaking debts of £800 billion, making them the most indebted in Europe. It may well be that lower interest rates have caused an increase in borrowing and, on average, those with mortgages now have total loans of nearly £63,000 each. I am much more concerned that on average individuals have £1,500 outstanding on credit and store cards and £3,000 on other loans
