I have a theory about the 'Whinging Pom' soubriquet. The Aussies don't like to rock the boat about anything - look at the quality of the media and the lack of outcry about most things in Australia.

The Brits have a history of rocking the boat in their own country - that's why the country has been so successful over the last 300 years - people stand up and say - 'Hey, what about trying it this way' (e.g. "what about introducing some competition to the supermarket cartel?")

The Aussies can't cope with 'boat-rockers' it threatens the perceived stability and status quo. So boat rockers are.....'whinging poms'.

Now you watch my arse get flamed!!!
Interesting theory - you may have point. I am sure there must be similar conversations being had on Italian and Greek (and other) forums devoted to migration. I guess home is always where people grow up and you can't help missing certain aspects of it - Really it is the negativaty of the posts that bothers me - Some seem so like "why did I bother" and "moving to Oz was the worst thing I have ever done". I am an eternal optimist and so I guess I am a bit sensitive to other peoples whinging and whining. There is a famous saying I try to live by "Always regret the things you did and not the things you failed to do" Moving to Oz is something I will always pervieve as something I failed to do if I didn't go - despite snakes, spiders, TRA knobheads, an embarrassingly good cricket and rugby side, probably no cider in Oz, etc etc etc - But I hope I am realistic in knowing all these things before I set out on this little adventure and so will acept all the new things I find with an open mind and a welcome heart. (F**k I sound patronising - time to shut up).

I'm with you - it used to drive me mad when I was in the UK - reading really negative posts.

There is a difference though - I've moaned about every country I've lived in - including the UK. It doesn't mean that the move was a mistake or that I don't on the whole enjoy the country. It's just good to get if off your chest once in a while. And with certain things - such as the supermarket cartel here, I'm more mad with the Australian people and government for not doing something about it.

Real moaning occurred when I used to live in a country where you couldn't buy alcohol, the mosques woke me up at 4 in the morning, corruption was blatant and a frequent sight on the way to work was a dead dog that had been left in the heat for 3 or 4 days on the roadside - all bloated and oozing.

(But I still enjoyed the place!!)

Australia
In Australia, 'cider' can be either an alcoholic drink as described above, or a sparkling non-alcoholic beverage made from apples. The most popular brands of alcoholic cider in Australia are Strongbow, and Mercury Cider made at the Cascade Brewery in Hobart, Tasmania. Cascade's 'Apple Isle' Sparkling Apple Juice is the most popular selling brand of non-alcoholic cider in Australia. Alcoholic cider is sold in bottleshops, while the non-alcoholic version is stocked in the soft-drink aisles of supermarkets

I have been using this forum for a couple of weeks now as I am just starting out trying to get a Visa (I may already have a job lined up!!!!). I am amazed at the negative vibes in many of the threads. People seem to keep judging the place by British standards they are used to. Newsflash folk - you ain't in Britain - so you can't get fu**ing mcvities biscuitsd or Iron Brew and Yes it is ****ing hot - etc etc etc - That is because it is Australia not Kent or Essex or any other county - Get used to it - Put up or shut up!!!

Is it any surprise the Australians refer to us as "whinging pommes"?

Right thats the end of my ... er... whinge I suppose!!!!!

Bazza.
YEAH WELL SAID.i have been on holiday and heard brits moan about being too hot.this was in zante in high season 35degrees.enough said!!
