when to start to cancel things
#1
We have had an offer on the house which we accepted last week. The buyers have had the survey done (last wednesday)and not heard anything so must have been ok.Thing is when do you start to cancel things like sky,BT,etc etc As we will be moving within a few weeks of completion of house sale.

If you need to ask this question on an emigration forum, it makes me wonder - just how the hell did you manage to get this far in life????????

anyway, depends on which utilities you have, but some take up to a month to take effect, and others can be cut off straightaway ie phone and t'internet

I would just ring the companies you need to and ask what notice needs to be given.

If you do not want to help with the question in hand then maybe it would be better not to reply at all!.

But, tell me...................what a bloomin' stupid question!!??
Surely, any 'slightly' intelligent person would NOT feel the need to ask others advice on such an obvious issue??

Maybe it's just me

Maybe some people need a little reassurance - This is probably the biggest thing they have ever done

reason for asking is a number of nice people on here have had problems when canceling sky and dont want to cause grief for in-laws as any mail will be going to there house.

I just cancelled my sky etc, and as you pay it in advance, they will manage to cancel from when you need it, just phone them at least month in advance so they can sort out final payments etc. As for everything else, best to just make a list of all direct debits, sit down one day at least 2 motnths before leavin house (if you have that long) and just go through them all and call them. Just explain you are emigrating, worked for us anyway. Good luck

I work for a major utility supplier, and for what its worth, we never assume people know what they're doing. Lots of people don't have the experience, and its not like 'phone BT when you move' is taught at school.
For your energy (ele and gas), you need to ensure you take a meter read on the DAY you move. I would then suggest you confirm the reading with your buyers, and then phone your energy company(s). They will send you final bills. Might be an idea if you can change to online billing before you move, so you can see these bills as soon as they are produced. For anything that you are contracted for - like sky, I would phone as soon as you know your move date. Used to work for BT also, and pretty sure they only need a few days (if that) notice. Hey, they can cut you off straight away if you don't pay your bills!
Good luck with your move.
