btw i have a linksys wrt54g wireless router, and it has given me no problems for the last 7 months.

Cisco have bough linksys to get into the home router/wireless market. They should produce some good products.

i think linksys are about the best routers anyway, i have tried others but always come back to linksys.

Computers cheaper in the UK - I don't think so! I am not that much off a whizzo on all the specs - but after I arrived I paid $989 for a Pentium 4 with loads of memory, CD RW facility etc. This is cheaper than I think I would have paid in the UK. Then again, I don't need or want the latest specs and did not do any research to validate my beliefs.....but I don't think I could have got my new machine in the UK for so cheap a price.

there are some good deals around in the UK at the moment but you are probably right.

£400 would not buy you much here.

Harvey Norman were advertising an Acer 2.5 gig Celeron, 256 meg Ram, 40 gig h/d + other stuff & a 17" monitor for $999.

I'd say thats pretty cheap.

Cisco make the best routers but they do not come cheap. That Billion that I bought is excellent value for money ($180). It has a firewall (proper firewall and not just NAT) and you can punch holes though it if you want.

I would highly recomment it.

Don't forget, if you can claim that you need a PC for your work, you can put it on your tax return as a necessary expense to reduce your tax. I work in IT and will be claiming for my printer, scanner, wireless router etc. that I bought after arriving. I brought my 2-y-o laptop with me from the UK, so can't claim for that, but when I update then I certainly will.

If doing this, bear in mind you need to declare the percentage home and work use, and claim for only that proportion. Having a second PC in the house should mean you can claim 100% business use for the new one (because you use the old one for home use), but a good tax accountant will advise further.

The tax savings can make an Aus PC or laptop cheaper than bringing a UK one.

You should have got your wife, or someone, to bring the laptop with them, then she could have sold it to you, and then you could have claimed it !!!

Bear in mind that CRT computer monitors (old style - like TV screens) bought in the UK won't last as long out here. It's because they are built to a northern hemisphere or southern hemisphere standard to compensate for the direction of magnetic field lines (see earlier posts on this). Use it in the "wrong" place and it will wear out much faster.

The prices are about the same as blighty (or cheaper?)

....so is the general concensus of opinion that it's best to buy a home PC in Aus rather than the UK..... Not being much of a techie, all I want is reasonable storage, conection to the internet, CD rewriter and a flat screen....oh and it must be able to play what seems like dozens of versions of "the Sims" that my 14 yr old daughter has!
....... we were thinking of getting a new one in the sales.
