Once I have a pr 175 visa and have found a job and a place to live, how easy is it to borrow money to buy a decent car?

Only asking as decent cars seem to be a fortune over there.

What sort of rate do you get too?

You may need 3 months of payslips/bank records to get a car loan - it depends on the lenders criteria.

Personally I wouldn't spend more more than $10k on a car to start off with and then run it for 3-4 years until your finances are stronger. Car's rust from the top-down here so they can last much longer [my diesel 4wd is 18 years old and still going strong with only a few rust spots].

Many people use home loan redraw facilities for loans on cars and swimming pools, this keeps interest rates low. eg 6.83% But not all pay enough extra back, to clear it in 3-5 years.

New cars are often cheaper, and better value than used cars, which are very expensive when compared to UK used car prices.

Thanks for that but a redraw on my variable home loan account is not really an option when I am only going to make my 1st payment within the next couple of weeks.

I wanted to get more cash from home loan for a pool but not a possibility when I asked

So now here I am with a new home loan. A home with no pool :-( (bought it as bargain and 10's of thousands cheaper than the rest) now want to have a pool for summer..

Will have to browse and see what the deals are I guess...

I am wondering if I could do a re-mortgage when house done up in 6 months to pay off a high interest pool loan.

Just wanted peoples stories of good searches of loans and experiences of getting them here.

Best rates can be found at www.ratecity.com.au (part of www.cannex.com.au). I got my car loan through ANZ but if you have road side assistance through RACQ (in QLD) you can get a cheaper rate - it may be the same for other states.

We have only been here since June and were only working for 3 weeks and bought a new Mazda with finance at 10.9%, which is quite high but you have to start somewhere. I think you will be quite surprised how determined the car dealers are to make a sale.

Cool.. I am after a swimming pool though I see car loans are cheaper than personal loans (secure/un)

Unless the pool has a name called Mazda or Merc??

I bought a car half cash half finance with rate of about 10% 3 weeks after arriving before i had started my job and with no proof of income. They would have quite happily lent me the whole lot, I was approved in about 3 minutes and they even paid my insurance and transfer fees.

I was also given a credit card and was offered approval in principle for a mortgage 2 days after getting of the plane. They couldnt do enough to get my business. Sometimes its nice to be a "brand new customer only".

And depends on what you deem a decent car. I think some makes here are much cheaper than UK. Guess it depends on country of origin and cost of importation.

Wait a couple of years before you launch into a pool - you will probably find that you dont really need or want one at all after the initial flush of enthusiasm. There are plenty of public places to swim.
