We had been planning to head to Perth but now having a peek at other areas.... especially since my OH watched WDU the other day and quite liked the look of Darwin.
Having never been to Darwin, what is it like.... compared to other areas of Oz?

Remote, hot, humid - but some people thrive on that. A lot more "rugged" than most other Aussie cities because of its isolation.

Humid - it's humid in the wet season but it's
Remote - Not quite sure what this means. Darwin is 2 hrs by flight to Bali and 4.5 hrs to Singapore. There are more interesting things to do and places to visit in Asia than in the southern part of Australia.

Hi Pozz,
You can always visit. We love it but sadly are on the move South. The temp is not really an issue but the humidity can be. Dry season is good for the touring bit, Kakadu, Kathrine, Mendil Beach and the markets.
In the wet season most people try to keep in the aircon out of the humidity but when the rains and storms come its another wonderous sight!
Property is very expensive and so is fuel. The people are very friendly but but be aware are very laid back..it's the NT...not today, not tommorrow, not tuesday...get my drift!
As I said we love it and will try to get back to stay soon... Hope that helps.

I spent 2.5yrs in Darwin and it is hot and humid, especially in the wet season. Dry season is perfect! I think what irked me most is that there aren't alot of shops ie. 1 - Big W, 1 - Target, 1 K-Mart etc.
I loved the weather and I loved the beaches there, beautiful..... and the Mindil Beach Markets. Also really enjoy Litchfield.
My husband (who spent 9 years between Katherine and Darwin) and I were happy to move south, we believe Darwin is too remote. Remote being that the next town is 3hrs down the road - Katherine, which doesn't offer much and the reason why people who live in Katherine head to Darwin for shopping etc. Fuel is definitely more expensive there.
I like Darwin but I would be very hesitant to actually live there again.

There certainly aren't as many jobs in Darwin so its not the best first place to live for migrants (unless you already have something lined up)
I thought about it briefly but the heat/humidity seemed a bit too much for 6 months of the year, plus swimming in the sea is a bit more dangerous with all of the jellyfish, saltwater crocs and sharks
Its not for me but some people thrive up there and love it.
