If you immigrate to NZ and become a NZ citizen you are automatically allowed to immigrate to Australia.

I thought the Aussie government was cracking down on 'back door migrants'? Hmmmm......might look into that....

You can live and work in Aus with NZ citizenship but you don't get PR. That has to be applied for in the usual way

Why South Africa? the highest murder rate in the world, you will have to turn
your house into a prison and if you leave it you will probably get car jacked and murdered. There was a story about a white family who had an electric fence around their house to keep out the burglars but it did'nt work because they were able to cut through the wires so what the family did was put
land mines around their house as the only way to keep them out.

If someone or something took this away from me, I'd have slit my wrists, so I wouldn't have to worry what to do with my life

I hope you all fulfill your Australian dream, otherwise it seems like AA will be kept very busy!

Seriously though, I asked the question because I am in the process of weighing up all the pro's and con's regarding returning to Oz and I must say it is a much harder decision the second time round!!! :scared:

If we decide not to return, I guess we will probably relocate within the UK.It is looking more likely that we will return. I'm not sure if we are brave or stupid but I guess we will find out!

Good luck to all of you!

I can honestly say hand on heart that South Africa is the single most fantastic country I have ever been to bar none!

The crime is largely demographic. You have to remember that the legacy of apartheid is that there are still areas of relative stability and prosperity and areas of extreme povery and crime. There are places you simply do not go for a walk if you are white and value your life. Nevertheless, the Garden Route and parts of the Cape still have relatively low crime and some people still even leave their doors unlocked! Anyway, Africa in general has a unique magic about it which I cannot really describe, it needs to be experienced.

I would only consider it as a last resort, as mental health nurses would probably be traumatised by the system I have heard exists there. Nevertheless, this is a country that very few people really understand anytrhing about without having been there.

Got a friend who lived their for 20 years but left because of the crime (mostly). She went to visit some friends last christmas and is now homesick! Not sure where exactly her friend is but she has a view of Table Mountain on her way to work every day.

She must be in or very near Cape Town I guess. This city must have the most amazing setting for a city I think I've ever seen. Plenty of 'gated' houses in many parts of the city mind. Big signs that say 'armed response' etc, so basically if you break into someones house, you're likely to get shot!

I've been to parts of Africa which are supposed to be even worse for crime and come back in one piece. Maybe I was lucky, but I know that I also don't act like a dumb tourist. In fact many folks would probably think I was pretty down at heel. I don't dress to impress!

I think that's a key thing wherever you go that is 'dodgy'. If you look like a tourist then you 'must have money'.

We (husband and I) have discussed this. If we chose to return to Europe it would definitely be the UK and not Holland (where my husband comes from). We think the UK also has alot going for it........but hopefully the dream will continue for a long time yet

The thought of it happening is awful, but with the ex wife probs and Andrew's diabetes we have reluctantly discussed the 'what if'. We're not sure what we would do exactly, one thing we are sure of is that we would not stay in the UK.
