Wow... all that worrying paid off...it looks like the 457's were approved and they just recieved our chest x-rays two days ago. The whole process took less than a month.
This is embarrassing but I don't know what to do now and can't find it on the site. Is there a letter or stickers we'll receive in the mail to afix to our passports?

Our company arranged for stickers to be put in passports after we had arrived.

When I first worked out the figures I came up with:
10% of those that return, will return in the first 5 years
90% of those that return do stay here for over 5 years, some of them after many, many years.

You are right, it is actually 31% of all PR migrants would return to the UK at some stage, but many of that % will stay here for the majority of their lives, before returning. Some of those that return, do in fact come back again.

You're wasting your breath (or your typing should I say
) - I've had this discussion before

Many people have problems with the 457 visa...make sure you are clued up on what it means....it effectively ties you to an employer. If you lose or leave the job you have to leave the country.
Why will they not employ you on a PR visa from the start.
There are a lot of people unhappy and having a basd time in Australia and many who return to their country of origin...try reading through this forum and also the 'moving back to the UK' section.

Emmigration is an adventure but has a lot of real negative issues that shouldn't be ignored.

Goll you guys. Is it because I'm just stressed out that I regret posting?
My husband has a PhD in water resources and is somewhat well known globally for his research.
I highly doubt the Australian Government, who hired him and gave us a substantial relocation package is going to send us packing in 30 days.

There's no need to regret posting - I hope everything works out for you but it's best to understand the in's and out's of things before you go.
Best of luck!

Your OH sounds like he has secured a great job - I hope you both love Melbourne - but if he hates the job once you get there and settle it is worth knowing what could happen isn't it?

Good luck, not long to go and never regret posting on here as you will see the responses are really very well informed (if sometimes seemingly pessamistic when you really need optimistic!!)

I did some statistic stuff a few years back, I know what I can tell from them figures and I also know that people will only get out of them what they want to see - maybe that applies to both of us but the difference is that I am quite willing to accept and agree with the figures you see, but you won't do the same courtesy to the ones I found in them.

Not that it matters really anyway

The same stats for 2003 showed:
A total of 12,508 UK Born Migrants arrived in Australia in 2003.
The departures figures for ALL British migrants permanently leaving during that year were:
Those having stayed less than 2 years: 685 left the country.
It seems that very very few leave in the first 2 years.
then...
Those having stayed between 2 and 4 years: 688 left the country.
It seems that very very few leave in the 2nd to 4th years.
Looking at it this way, it looks very positive.
People who move to Australia, have a bit of a sense of adventure, which means that many of them, after 10, 20 years or so, may get the travel bug again.
It doesn't mean they are leaving because they dislike the place, but it may be that they just wish to try something different, as they did when they moved UK to Australia originally ?
