This is embarrassing but I don't know what to do now and can't find it on the site. Is there a letter or stickers we'll receive in the mail to afix to our passports?
You do not need to have stickers put in passport, this can be done after you arrive .We just handed over our passports on landing and the information was all online for passport control to see.
Our company arranged for stickers to be put in passports after we had arrived.

You are right, it is actually 31% of all PR migrants would return to the UK at some stage, but many of that % will stay here for the majority of their lives, before returning. Some of those that return, do in fact come back again.

When I first worked out the figures I came up with:
10% of those that return, will return in the first 5 years
90% of those that return do stay here for over 5 years, some of them after many, many years.

You're wasting your breath (or your typing should I say ) - I've had this discussion before

There are also lots of people who are having a great time here many of whom don't frequent this or any other forum.

Good luck with the move.

The statistics are there Wendy in an Australian government publication.....you only have to read them even if they don't fit what you wish to believe.

Why will they not employ you on a PR visa from the start.

There are a lot of people unhappy and having a basd time in Australia and many who return to their country of origin...try reading through this forum and also the 'moving back to the UK' section.

You are one big fat negative party pooper... they are moving to Australia because they want an adventure, because they can, they want to experience the world and because it is a great place!!!!!!! Why not??????

I bet you one of those negative, critical, superior type people..... can't tell you how over them I am!!!!!!!!

What Grayling said what was absolute fact. The 457 visa is temporary - if a company decide they no longer want you, you have 30 days to find a new company to sponser you or to leave the country. It can be a very risky way to start an "adventure" especially if you sell your house to do so.

Emmigration is an adventure but has a lot of real negative issues that shouldn't be ignored.

Goll you guys. Is it because I'm just stressed out that I regret posting?

My husband has a PhD in water resources and is somewhat well known globally for his research.

I highly doubt the Australian Government, who hired him and gave us a substantial relocation package is going to send us packing in 30 days.

And no one's saying that the Aus Government would do that but it's something to be aware of and the same applies both ways. If your husband doesn't like the job and wants to quit he needs to find another sponser or leave.

There's no need to regret posting - I hope everything works out for you but it's best to understand the in's and out's of things before you go.

Best of luck!

People on this forum are just mines of really useful information - good or bad. While it is so important to be excited and live for the here and now it really doesn't hurt to just know the worst case scenario.
Your OH sounds like he has secured a great job - I hope you both love Melbourne - but if he hates the job once you get there and settle it is worth knowing what could happen isn't it?
Good luck, not long to go and never regret posting on here as you will see the responses are really very well informed (if sometimes seemingly pessamistic when you really need optimistic!!)

We will have to agree to disagree on this one. I can see the statistics in more than one way, you on the other hand can only see them in the way that proves your point.

I did some statistic stuff a few years back, I know what I can tell from them figures and I also know that people will only get out of them what they want to see - maybe that applies to both of us but the difference is that I am quite willing to accept and agree with the figures you see, but you won't do the same courtesy to the ones I found in them.

Not that it matters really anyway

The same stats for 2003 showed:

A total of 12,508 UK Born Migrants arrived in Australia in 2003.

The departures figures for ALL British migrants permanently leaving during that year were:
Those having stayed less than 2 years: 685 left the country.
It seems that very very few leave in the first 2 years.

then...
Those having stayed between 2 and 4 years: 688 left the country.
It seems that very very few leave in the 2nd to 4th years.

Looking at it this way, it looks very positive.

People who move to Australia, have a bit of a sense of adventure, which means that many of them, after 10, 20 years or so, may get the travel bug again.
It doesn't mean they are leaving because they dislike the place, but it may be that they just wish to try something different, as they did when they moved UK to Australia originally ?

...and it does not mean that those who stay like the place either.

There are many reasons for staying as there are for going.
