Mine takes about 2 hours, and on short cycle about an hour...

And therefore, for example, I can't do the washing before work... it won't be finished by the time I have to go... Or when you're going out for the day.

But yeah, on the whole, I don't really have a problem with it taking long.

Depends if you have a schedule for the day. Like maybe you want to get 3 washes done in the morning before you go out in the afternoon. If each wash takes 1-2hours, that screws up that plan.

Re: What type of washer do u have in OZ?

We're renting a toploader at the moment (but as of Monday next we'll have ALL OUR OWN STUFF BACK - YIPPEE)... but we'll be going back to a Bosch frontloader...

agreed - toploader takes hardly any time at all - but it beats the !*?* out of the clothes - I've been using it since early December and some of my clothes are showing the effects.... Until reading this thread I was worried about what I'd been doing!
I often put the wash on last thing at night and it's then ready by the morning to be either airdried or tumbled. Or if I'm awake and hear it switch off, I'll get up and hang out/tumble the washing ready for the morning (at which point I'll usually just look at it!!)!
Our front loader has a timer already built into it - and is MUCH quieter than the toploader - but before this one, I had a basic very old front loader and when putting a wash on (eg in the morning, before going to work; or at night, before going to bed) I'd use a timer switch... I just needed to monitor the duration of the different wash cycles on one occasion and it was then easy!

This rented toploader is a complete water glutton - it drinks gallons of the stuff - we were on water meters in the UK and whilst being aware of water usage (ie I liked the water, would use a lot of it, but not on 'silly' things IMHO)... I am shocked at the amount this machine gets through! I seriously hope our landlady's footing the water bill and not us (and yes, advice on that would be super!!)

so my vote would be for a European frontloader -

Two whole hours!!!???!!! Blimey!

But still, stick it on a timer. End of problem.

Or run it in the evening. (You are in some evenings, aren't you? I know you young things enjoy your social whirl...)

Can I ask those who are saying that you cant go out etc if the washings not finished, why you cant go out & just leave the machine to finish its cycle by itself? Have I missed something crucial or something?

Id leave my kids as well, but the house is more likely to be burnt down if I left the kids than if I left the washing machine ;)

Tbh, I've never thought of a timer :o
So yeah, I guess that's problem solved..!

(I don't want the washing in the machine for 8 hours before I take it out.. can't be good..)

Anyway, as I said, it's not much of a problem. It's my own laziness/forgetfulnes. Like I should turn it on now, but if I forget or can't be bothered, it'll be 10pm before I do it, and that won't do :D

Not if the tumble dryer hasn't been connected, in our case anyway! :o We bought the washer and the tumble dryer at the same time, errrr it's been almost 5 months now, but haven't needed to use it, thanks to the weather. So the poor thing is still sitting inside it's original packaging, right next to the washer... :D

Anyone interested to buy a brand new Westinghouse dryer from us?

Yes, Mrs DB, another free box (and the plastic wraps) if you buy the dryer! :p I still have to open a few more boxes - a juicer, a rice cooker that can make steam puddings, and a sewing machine. I don't know how these items got into my high priority list so long ago?!?!

My frontloader has a quickwash cycle that takes about 55 mins too, I never wash on the full cycle. It also has a delay timer so I could set it to start in the early hours then it will be finished by the time I get up. Not used that yet here but I did that all the time in the UK - it's exactly the same model, bought here though as my daughter got my old one when I came over!

So you don't mind having your clothes bleached by the fierce sun?

Harking back to a related old topic, I have noticed that the yellow plastic pegs went from bright yellow to pale creamy yellow after a mere few hours in the sun! (They're not brittle, though... yet.)
