Hi!
Just wondering on peoples general opinion on what to take/ship when moving??
Our feeling is that we would like to go with just clothes and a few personal bits, we thought we would probably store a couple of boxes with photos and sentimental bits at my parents and can bring them over bit by bit or when people visit.
We don't have any very expensive furniture, the only things that were relitavly expensive are our water bed, which appear to be a lot cheaper in Oz anyway and our Mexican pine sitting room stuff but this is unsealed wood.
For what it would cost to ship everything we figure we could buy a lot of stuff there, also if we ship it all we still have to get through the first 3 months before it arrives. Also it sounds very appealing to start again, we are not material minded and often look at what we have accumulated and it seems a waste. We are happy to start out with second hand stuff. OK so it sounds like we know what we want to do right? But we have had a couple of people who have emigrated tell us to ship everything!
So what are you all planning to do or did you do?? Anyone gone/ going with just the clothes on your back type of thing??

Hi
We are in a similar position to you, even down to the waterbed.
We have decided to sell everything including our plasma, ship about 5 or 6 boxes (Denby, tools, r/c cars, photos, dvds) and like you only take what we can carry.
We are hoping to go early next year but still waiting med request.
We are going to Brisbane in October so will have a good idea what we will need hopefully then, so our plans may change!
Will update once we return.
Good luck

We are a family of four and needed to bring a load of electrical items - could not afford the replacement costs of all of those. We bought loads of new stuff in the first 3 months whilst living in an 'apartment' - just could not manage without certain items for that long. Also, bought quite a few items when we moved into our first rental home. Just as well we opted to do this as our stuff took 4 months to get here
As you say, living without certain comforts for 3+ months isn't good! Having a decent chair to sit on is SOOOO important because boy, all the 'leg work' you have to do on arrival sorting everything out, makes you really appreciate your sofa/comfy chair!!!!We sold a lot before we left for 'rock bottom' prices just to be rid of it! It was nice to start off with a lot of 'new' pieces of furniture I must admit! Should not have to worry about replacing them for years - hopefully
So money well spent IMO. From your post, its sounds as if you haven't got that much to replace anyways - so you are in a good position to buy all new on arrival - which is great! Especially if you can afford it! No doubt someone will disagree - but this is MY opinion. If your finances allow, it is good to 'start afresh' as Australia is so different from the UK in so many ways. Style of living etc, climate, most peoples lives change dramatically, especially if you are an outdoor person - Australia has so much to offer in that respect.
I will be VERY honest. We have still got loads of stuff in boxes that we ummed and ad about whether to bring or not - just doesn't mean the same anymore - new life - new start and all that jazz
(course couldn't do without me Robbie DVD'S/CD'S) he he!!!!All the best
