I'm getting all nervous now, i am always cold in England, we're moving to Sydney (Dapto, Wollengong) is it warm enough once you get used to it, most of the people saying it's cold i noticed are from Perth. I know my uncle who lives over there said that he had snow a couple of years ago but he didn't go so far to mention as to whether it was really cold at night. Do most rentals not have any heating then or at least r/c air con or am i getting the wrong impression. Think i should tell the OH that when we buy we HAVE to have under floor and r/c air con???!!!

Can't help particuarly, as live in Scotland (although it might make you feel better to know we have our heating on  as it got really cold the last few days). But just a little energy efficiency tip - electric is most expensive when you use it to heat things - the more heat you want to generate, the more money it will cost. If you have to use electric, look for something that retains heat when not 'on' - thats why those rubbish old storage heaters have concrete slabs in the middle - they use electric to heat the slabs, which then released the heat slowly (in theory. In reality you were just cold all the time, less cold some of the time). Anything like blow heaters, or things with an element as such - elec fires etc - will always cost a bomb.

It's warmer down on the coast, of course - but it's a coldwater coast. Think Portugal or Oregon.

We're 600-odd metres above the Gong and away from the water, so are exposed to the altitude factor as well as the inland one. We get snow about every three years and heavy frosts during the winter - yet most houses have huge gaps under their doors, minimal insulation, single 3mm glass and inadequate heating systems. We've never been so cold in our lives for several months each year!

Partly true - but storage heating takes a lot of anticipation. If you heat up the storage medium during a cold night and the next day is warm, you waste all that energy and probably have to open the windows to let the heat out. I know - been there, done it!

Just one radiant heater with fan... just bought it this week...

it's not that cold here, but just need it to take the chill off the room in the evening/morning... but after that it's back to t-shirt and shorts during the day!! But I guess it's not July yet.. so might have to use it a bit more then?

We've got an old weatherboard house and the only heating is a Vulcan gas heater in the family room. Found out we had no insulation in the roof, so we got the job done a couple of weeks ago. It has made so much difference. Now just to fill the gaps around the doors and windows

My OH bought a wall heater for the bathroom, as he is a southern softie

Hi
I install underfloor heating in sydney. I couldnt tell you offhand the cost because it would depend on the roomsize and we dont really get involved in the costing. On the whole the majority of jobs we fit in is bathrooms and ensuites. For an average bathroom you would be looking at around $800-$1000. This also depends on the type of floor heating you want as well.

Well we've had the r/c air con fitted and.......................it's too bloody hot!!!!

I know we've still got English skin (only been here since beginning March) but I've just turned it on this morning at 5.45am and turned it off at 6am, it's so efficient. I am actually looking forward to a cold day (and I mean English cold not Aussie cold, as our Aussie neighbours complain it's freezing) so I can turn it on and feel smug that we made the right choice.
S xx
p.s or a lovely hot day so I can put on the air con!

We have a wood burning slow combustion fire.

We need it now it's winter here in Adelaide.

Unfortunately most houses are not as well insulated so they do get colder .

we've also got a storage heater in the living room not been able to get it going since we moved in, however after a lot of faffing last night got it working its an ugly looking bugger but has kept hot all day

HI :p

As i am sitting here in my PJ's (big fleecy ones ) and a blanket and fluffy socks, i am wondering what everyone is using for heat.
We are renting a 4 bed in Perth , which has no source of heat at all. we are using electric blow heater which we have only just got around to buying, but as i have just started work at Synergy i have realized that it is going to cost us a fortune.

All i wanted was a #Calor gas heater (ones with the bottles) as i thought that they would be better price wise. but i cant find any anywhere.

anyone got any ideas , or just let me know what you are using

thanks
debbie

You could all just insulate your homes like the UK does. Double glazing, wall insulation, carpets etc. Then heating won't cost anywhere near as much.
Just cos the Ozzies don't insulate doesn't mean we have to be the same.

We've got ducted gas warm air heating in every room except the bathrooms. Proper programme setting and thermostat and everything. Lovely and snug for when I get out of bed in the morning and again when I come home at night:thumbsup:
