We are not as big as the yankies but bigger than most others then again what do you know thicko.
The Royal Navy's Vanguard Class submarines SSBNs (Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear) are on patrol, maintaining the strategic nuclear deterrent 24 hours a day 365 days a year. Closer to home, Northern Ireland patrols and Fishery Protection duties are being undertaken, whilst our commitments to NATO are being met.
Worldwide ships are conducting exercises and training to keep their capabilities up to scratch. In the South Atlantic two ships and an RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) tanker are on patrol. In the Gulf, the ‘Armilla’ patrol supports British shipping, demonstrating the UK's commitment to this region of strategic importance. In the West Indies, a guardship is on counter drugs operations with its tanker, a tasking that has been spectacularly successful.
In general, The Royal Navy's capabilities are designed around 3 core assets, carrier borne aircraft, submarines and amphibious forces; all supported by escorts and other vital enabling units.
Looking at Aircraft Carriers, during the conflict in Afghanistan, HMS Illustrious and HMS Ocean were used as commando helicopter carriers to fly in the Royal Marines. Operation of the Royal Navy Sea Harrier FA2 air defence fighter and the Royal Air Force Harrier GR7 ground attack aircraft are combined under ‘Joint Force Harrier’. This force is capable of operating anywhere in the world and has greatly increased aircraft carrier operational capability.
Nuclear attack submarines, SSNs (Ship Submersible Nuclear), are highly capable platforms in any crisis. Their flexibility, mobility and sustainability make them powerful instruments of Government policy. Able to sustain high speeds, they can cover 600 nautical miles per day with no need to refuel. They may be first on the scene, overtly or covertly, where they are then available for SF (Special Forces) insertion, early denial of the sea to an enemy, launch of Tomahawk Cruise Missiles as used in Afghanistan, or gathering critical intelligence. They can remain at sea independent of outside support for 90 days.
Amphibious capability, as part of the UK's Joint Rapid Reaction Force, provides the means by which the UK can insert troops with the necessary heavy battle winning equipment, into a hostile area in tactical fighting order. To achieve this an Amphibious Task Force (ATF) comprises three essential elements; amphibious ships, the landing force and escort ships to defend the task force. HMS Ocean, a LPH (Landing Platform Helicopter), enables amphibious assault from sea to shore to be conducted from the air.
In outlining the capabilities of amphibious forces, carriers and nuclear submarines, it is important to remember that destroyers and frigates play key roles. These ships are essential assets in any maritime conflict, providing air and sea defence, carrying a Lynx helicopter which has an ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) torpedo, and ASuW (Anti-Surface Warfare) missile capability. They are crucial in sea control tasks upon which all reinforcement and amphibious operations depend.
