Default What did you do with your returned $100k bond?

Out of interest...what did people do with the $100k, after it was returned to them- holiday, downpayment on a house, car, saved it....went back home?

(those that gained a visa that way )

As above, but also is it tax free? and what is the intrest rate on it?

Just trying to figgure if they are a good safe place to invest some cash.

For some visas (e.g. Independent 136) you can buy an extra 5 points (but only 5 points) by investing $100k in certain government bonds for 12 months.

It's taxable. If you are still in the UK when the interest is paid then the ATO takes 10% and IR taxes its normal cut less 10%. If you are in Aus then the ATO takes its normal cut.

The rates are generally comparable to a savings account so you should be able to find better if you want to tie up your money. Should be safe though, as they are issued by the state governments. Note you don't have to get it from the government of the state that you are going to.

You can actually buy them from ANY state government, doesn't have to be where you're going to live. We put our money with WA but are going to Victoria in 2 weeks' time. You can shop around and go with the one offering highest interest rate.

They are as safe as you can get as government bonds are government guaranteed.
