In the UK I would call a Focus / Astra etc a medium car but here that would be small / medium. A Ford Falcon (Mondeo size) or Holden Commodore would be the most common by Australian sizes but Japanese cars are more and more popular eg Toyota Corolla / Camry. Personally I have a 2 litre Mazda 3 that would be a warm if not hot hatch in the UK but is just a typical small / medium car over here.

Same cars just have different names (inc makers name i.e Holden is Vauxhall). Would recommend anything Japanese, as all very reliable, have very good build quality, not always the most exciting cars, but with amount of speed cameras in Aus who'd want to speed :scared:
Oh would also buy a brand new one, as are better value than second hand!

You could buy two and wear one on each foot

Seriously though, they are a good car with loads of extras and cheap to run. Handy as a second car / runabout but useless for taking a tent and accessories bush etc. They were selling like hot cakes when petrol prices were shooting up recently but that may have eased since.

We bought a new Honda Civic (different to the UK one) and are very happy with it. Equally the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus are both very good cars.

Subaru Impreza - not the full blown WRX, just the 'i' or 'r' version. The 'i' is tee 8 valve (a bit flat sometimes) the 'r' is the 16 valve. Both 2 litre. Comfy, plenty of toys in them and plenty of room if you get the hatch. They handle well and hold their value. Also you get Subaru's 'bomb proof' All Wheel Drive system as standard. Not a full blown 4x4 of course, but handy in slippery conditions.
